We need more Lower Tier Bulls

We bought some yearling registered Herefords off of a bull sale in the $850 range that would have weighed 1100 plus. We bought them because they were cheap enough to cut and feed but ended up not cutting them because they were nice looking bulls and their epds looked pretty good. The...

    Brahman x Jersey F1 heifers

I didn't say anything about input costs. Having higher input costs doesn't necessarily make their calves worth more, having calves that will consistently gain and grade better than anybody else makes them worth more. I didn't say they made any more money than anybody else. I just said they...

    Brahman x Jersey F1 heifers

The market report I looked at for Crockett TX said 400-500 lb steers brought an average of 1.45 with a high of 1.70. 400-500 lb steers in Fort Pierre, South Dakota last week brought 1.72 on the average, and 5 weights brought 1.73 average. Those northern high percentage angus calves will...

    Black Baldies

That would be fine for terminal, but most of the commercial guys I know over there, if they are keeping heifers, would make sure to keep their cows 50% angus or higher.

    Black Baldies

I can tell you that unless you are selling load lots or more at a time even slightly eared cattle will usually take a beating in Nebraska. We sold 35 black heifers in a group at a sale barn in Nebraska 2 years ago that had about 10 heifers with 1/8 or less ear and they were docked...

Just a bunch of calves out of old sale barn cows I bought this spring. The black calf in the front came out of a gray 5 year old cow bred 8 months that barely cost kill price. Here's a picture of the pair when the calf was younger. Every once in a while you get a good one.

    Braunvieh

My dad fed a half a pot load of Braunviehs one time and said it took them forever to finish. Said he would never own another one. I've only ever bought one probably 5 years ago and I still hear about it. Most of the calves I see that are noticeably braunvieh get a 20+ cent dock.

    I'm bored

Funny thing about certified Herefords. High percentage Hereford fat cattle are getting a better premium than angus right now if you know where to sell them. Several years ago when my dad lost the feedyard he built in a family dispute he got a deal buying for a company out of South Dakota...

    I'm bored

I don't have anything against Brahmans. I've owned them before and I will again. I do think that other breeds can be similar quality cows. I sat through a herd sellout in South Dakota a couple years ago. Every cow sold was 3-5 years old, every group averaged 1200-1325 lbs. All high...

    I'm bored

First of all, you state that there are only ten major feeders in the US. Although those are the ten biggest there are a bunch more right there with them in terms of size. Funny thing is, it shows that two of the top 10 are in Idaho, apparently you also struggle with reading. I wasn't...

    I'm bored

The biggest one would would be Simplot's in Grand View Idaho. I believe they feed between 150,000 and 200,000 head there. They own another lot in Pasco Washington that feeds about 100,000. Agri-Beef used to have some big ones in Idaho that probably fed over 100,000 head too, I don't know if...

She's done all kinds of stuff. She got her first cow as a yearling heifer for working around the farm and doing all the chores while everyone else was busy. She's made some money babysitting. She got a purebred puppy for Christmas a few years ago and has been selling its puppies for a little...

Here's a spotted calf a couple hours after he was born. . She's my youngest sisters cow. 15 years old and she has already bought herself 7 cows. This one was an older 3-1 when we bought her last summer so we are not real sure what the sire is. He has pretty big ears though.

Just had the first couple hit the ground The little blue calf came out tiny, hoping she grows good, not sure which of our Bulls the father is but I'm guessing the shorthorn. The cow and calf in the other picture is hopefully going to be good. #25 is our best roan cow, weans a big calf...

Show your bull(s) - Put a pic up

I think I've seen some relatives of his before. Bought a set of gray baldy line back feeder calves a couple years ago at a sale that would have matched him. Man had twenty some head of them and every one was a gray baldy and had white on the tail and part way up the back. At least the calves...

Wanting to buy some middle aged cows

I was talking Fort Pierre SD and a few sales in Montana I had seen. A couple weeks ago one man had ten pot loads of 3 and 4 year old cows at Fort Pierre. His cows with short tails and short ears brought 2025 and that was the least any of them brought. Bred sales have been more up and down...

Wanting to buy some middle aged cows

Depending on flesh, how good the bags are, and disposition, 3-7 year old heavy breds are costing between 1200 and 1650 at most of the sales I've been at in the south. Special sales they have been higher though. I've been seeing a lot of 3-5 year olds still bringing 2000-2500 out west yet.

Wanting to buy some middle aged cows

A lot of K7 stuff will have been bought out of a stockyard. That's not a bad thing I am just telling you that so you know. If they don't mind buying some cows at the sale barn, there's a few of us that go to several sales not to far from you that could probably find some pretty reasonable. If...

    Opinion on my feed

He fed both and there wasn't all that big off a difference in rate of gain between the two. Fed a lot of screenings but it wasn't available all the time so fed a lot of rolled corn too. He had a big shed he would dump about 30 semi loads of screenings in the fall so it would last into winter a...

    Opinion on my feed

My grandpa fed 5,000 hd on nothing but a mix of corn screenings, soy hull pellets, and sunflower seed shells. Quality of screenings between elevators changed greatly. One elevator it was just about as good as rolled corn and the next it was half dust. When he started feeding it they gave it...
