antibiotics and other drugs - for newbies *updated 11/26/14*

LA 200 may leave lumps, as do other antibitotics and several vaccines. Use a 3/4 inch long to 1 inch long needle and make sure you are getting completely under the skin when making your injection. If you are not completely under the skin, it will usually leave a larger lump. Personally, I...

    eye cancer/cataract

How does the bacteria know that it is a hereford? What about black baldies, tiger stripes, or any other hereford cross. Are they more succeptable than other breeds? If it is the white face that makes them more succeptable, then what about Charlais and others, are they more prone to pinkeye...

    eye cancer/cataract

How would you treat cancer eye? I would deduct from your reasoning then, the bacteria is on the outside of the eye, where the salt can get to it. What does your vet say about this? I don't think it necessarily sounds barbaric, I'm just not convinced that this treatment method works. When we...

    eye cancer/cataract

Opinions do vary on this one Billy. Talk to 10 different researchers and you will get 10 different answers, but I will concede and stand corrected. Here is an interesting thought that I read from one source. "Causes of pinkeye There is controversy among researchers about the cause of...

    eye cancer/cataract

Pinkeye is a virus. Has nothing to do with breed or color. It is much more noticiable on cattle with white faces, such as herefords, charlais, etc....

4-6 month old heifers with a huge belly

I agree with milkmaid on this one. These calves are not old enough for grass only without developing the pot belly. They need more protein.

    warts

    1. Leave it alone, it will probably go away on its own within 6 to 9 months. Warts are a virus and cattle will usually develop antibodies that will take care of the virus 2. Cut it off or pull it off. Depends on the size and location, but this method can work well if you need imediate...

    Manure On The Tail.

In the past 30 years I can't recall a single cow on my place having her tail fall of because of having manure on it. However if you are really concerned about it and you don't feel like washing it out, why not use a pair of electric clippers and simply shave the hair off underneath the manure...

    Cancer eye or ?

If it is cancer you will know soon enough. The tumor will continue to grow and will protrude further out from the eye. In latter stages the tumor may rupture and bleed. It may do this if she hits it on something as well. The tumors will usually grow off of the 2nd eyelid, but I've seen them...

    horn issue

Skip; You need to tip them horns. A 1000 pound plus size cow can hurt you without intending too.

    Clover and Bloat

You're taking a chance, but clover is great feed If they are on the legumes continuously, shouldn't be an issue. It is a great feed here in the early spring up until early summer.

    lost calf

No idea what it could have been. If all others okay, just chalk it up to "sh$t happens". Wouldn't lose much sleep over it. If it happens again, find better medical help. From your post, doesn't sound like your vet is much help.

    eye problem

A one eyed cow can raise calves as good as a two eyed cow. I certainly wouldn't ship a good quality one eyed cow. Have a blue eyed cow myself. She raises good calves. She isn't going anywhere.

    Breathing difficulty

I agree with Texan on this topic. 103 here today. Lots of cattle here are larthargic, not eating well, breathing hard, etc... Some are even foaming at the mouth and panting with their tongues hanging out. They are not sick, they are HOT. Look at them early in the morning and they are okay...

    lumps on neck

tnrichie; As you've probably figured by now, the knots are nothing to worry about. Should go down in time. Some take longer than others.

Last 2 calves dead in 3 days

Don't take this board so serious. I'm sure you're forgiven by now. Welcome to the boards. Maybe you were misunderstood a little. Maybe you're misunderstanding some on here too. Welcome aboard. What did you find out about your calves? What was wrong? Why did they die?
