    Feeder futures

Friend of mine was doing this when they ran about 1,000 head. Local guys would bring him orphan calves also. He said it really took 4 calves sucking her to break even. Of course calves weren't worth much back then though. It would definitely pay now.

Market has been good this year. We sold a few weeks ago instead of waiting until July like we normally do. Steers averaged 656# and brought $1,815 a head. Heifers averaged 609# and brought $1,545 a head. Not bad for this raggedy group of calves This group just wasn't as good quality wise as...

    Feeder futures

We have been trying to ship a load for the last 4 weeks. Between holidays, truck booking, and work we haven't been able to get it scheduled. Finally got things scheduled to ship this Sunday and driver just text me and said market is down $100 a head this week because of eclipse and bird flu. It...

    Feeder futures

I think cattle are high right now because everything else is high. Big corporations will take any chance available to them to raise prices. I'm more concerned with how hard prices will fall off in the next few years. Hopefully they'll land somewhere in the middle of what they were 2 yrs ago and...

    Retaining heifers?

We've got a friend that is in his 80's and has several hundred acres. He's got some of the worst fences I've seen and he never talks about replacing or fixing any of it. I finally found out that his theory is if you always retain heifers and never buy any replacement cattle you don't have to...

    Retaining heifers?

I was in the exact same situation for allot of years. Payments were bigger but numbers are just numbers. Stick with it and it will all work out for you.

    Retaining heifers?

Towards the end of last year I was really needing to buy some cows and wanted some sure enough Brangus cattle. The kind I was looking for that would calve when we needed them to were few and far between. I found a set of heifer pairs in Louisiana that were priced right but didn't have time to...

    Retaining heifers?

That sounds like a good plan but a mortgage can be a whole lotta years and a whole lotta dollars. Shoot the mortgage I had at one time would've killed a couple herds of young cows.

    Retaining heifers?

Are you talking not seeing them in person? If so I'd have to disagree

    Retaining heifers?

I can't remember the exact year the last time cattle were high like this but thinking it was around 2014? Things were different then than they are now though. I had the feeling that was going to be a short lived cycle so we didn't expand. This round of high prices is looking to last another 2-4...

    Retaining heifers?

The cattle market is a funny thing because to stay current you have to buy and sell in the same market. If the calf market is high it cost you more to keep the herd current and stay on track. We added 20 bred heifers this year so it ate up a bunch of the good profits we made but hopefully it'll...

    Feeder futures

I don't understand how prices are staying so high in this economy. When HB meat is $4-6 a pound and a Ribeye is $18-22 at Wal-Mart things have got to give somewhere. I'd think folks would be eating more chicken and pork and shying away from beef. I sure hope the calf prices stay here for a few...

What does value added mean ?

A few examples what I see on reports. The report with "Full" would be the same as "Fleshy"

What does value added mean ?

Without going through a bunch of sale sheets I'd say .10-.20 cents.

What does value added mean ?

An Oakie calf is a low quality calf. Might have some Loghorn, corriente, or dairy cow mixed in. I'm not sure but figure the term comes from the calves that run in the hills of SE Oklahoma, they are just rough looking cattle.

What does value added mean ?

Do you have the Cattle Market Mobile app? If not download it and look at the bigger sales like OKC, OKC West, and some of the sales up North. Unweaned, Fleshy, and Oakie calves are docked pretty hard 90% of the time but, "thin fleshed" calves bring a premium. Of course if you don't plan on...

What does value added mean ?

Buyers don't want fleshy calves. You spend a bunch of money to get them good and fat only to take a beating at the sale.

What does value added mean ?

To get the value added money around here we have to ship calves to a bigger sale or wait for one of the 3 local barns to have a special sale. This was a hard lesson for me to learn. Only thing I can figure is the buyers at the local sales are there for calves that were trailer weaned and they...

    Phantom bidders

Allot of sales do online and phone bids now. Makes it difficult.

    Bad advice?

It seems like from December to March the 7&8 weights always fall off and the 5-6 weights will gain momentum. I'm guessing this has to do with cow/calf people pulling/weaning calves and the yearling guys buying lighter weights to turn out on wheat. I also think the feedlots have a harder time...
