    How much rest?

Yeah. They all get grain daily, free choice mineral, and good pasture barring dry weather. Also I usually keep a round bale in front of them year round but summer consumption is usually slim to none. I currently have 2 bulls and would typically use the 2.5 year old on herds #1 and 3, and my...

    How much rest?

Say I’ve got 3 different herds of cattle. I’m going to put the bull in with the first herd (15 cows) about May 20th. Leave him for 2 months. I have another herd (15 cows) I’d like to breed August -October, and another herd of 18 to breed November-January. Will this be too much on him? He’s 2.5...

    Mostly Heifer calves

Also, I used to manage a farm for another man. He had 42 black angus cows and one “high dollar” angus bull. Calved year round. During the 4 years I managed them, he never had more than 4 heifers born in a year.

    Mostly Heifer calves

I’m the opposite right now. 18 first time heifers currently calving. Of those, 12 have calved. Only 2 heifer calves. Also, this is the first breeding with this 2yr old bull.

1st Calf Heifers off and running!

Somewhat depends on the breed but I use 16-18 months personally.

    Conundrum

I’d agree with warren. You’ve raised them to be good replacement heifers. Find a different bull. I don’t guess you’d have a neighbor who you could lease a bull from, do you?

    Fall calving window

Well, you and I had similar plans. I had decided on Thanksgiving day too. However, this morning, my bull had other plans and put himself in with the girls. Oh, well. I’m just a week early and out 1 gate.

    Fall calving window

Quick question. Northeast Tennessee location. I have a group of cows that are fall calving. I usually breed them December 1 through late January/early February. Thinking about breeding November 1- January 10. This will put calves coming in August heat. Would you go ahead and breed or hold a...

    Need advice

Thanks everybody. Bottle calf is a Christmas baby, so she’s probably going to be weaned mid March, as long as she keeps growing like she has been. I think I’ll pen them together, or I’m at least going to try. I appreciate everyone on here always helping.

    Need advice

I had bad luck today. I had a cow die today. Haven’t got a clue why. Here’s the kicker. She had a calf on 10-8-22. So 4 months to the day. My wife is already raising a bottle calf. Would you put the calf of the dead cow with the bottle calf and feed each one milk + calf starter, put them...

    Dumb question

Yeah. My goal was just to simply tighten up the calving window of this herd. My other 3 herds are all in about a 65 day window, and I’m satisfied with that. This herd, is at about 110-115 days. That just is too long. The vaccines that I will be using, the only one that is mlv just requires 4...

    Dumb question

That’s interesting. I’m like you. I would have expected them to start cycling, at least part of them.

    Dumb question

They started calving in August, majority calved September. There is only a few left- the heifers that I held from the bull an extra 6 weeks or so. I wouldn’t give anything a shot of lute that was less than 45 days from calving, just the Aug/Sept/early Oct calving cows. I’m looking at working...

    Dumb question

Thanks for your replies and opinions. You worded that perfectly- a reset. I hadn’t considered the maturing of the next egg. I may just go with the whole 2 shots, 10 days apart closer to breeding. I really appreciate y’all always willing to share your wisdom and experiences with me.

    Dumb question

I’ve got a group of cows that will finish calving in about a week. After they get done, they’ll be brought in and vaccinated/wormed/etc. My bull won’t be put back in until early January. My question is, if I go ahead and give all the girls a shot of lutalyse (with the hopes of tightening up the...

    Just bad luck?

Thanks everybody. I should have been more clear. The heifers are purebred Charolais and purebred Angus, not Char-Angus cross. I don’t know who Dr Bonsma is, but I’d like to know more about his theory. Also, I don’t weigh calves at birth, but I am meticulous with notes and record keeping. I will...

    Just bad luck?

I was there at birth. They were both positively dead before they were out of the heifers. No prolonged labors either.

    Just bad luck?

Just started calving with a small group of heifers. Charolais and Angus heifers(born here), bred to a Gelbvieh bull (I've owned him since he was 7 months old, and he's been here 15 months). These are his first calves also. So far, I’ve had 2 calves, both born dead. They’re all in great shape...
