    Aborting Calves

What TC Ranch said. It could be a hormonal thing potentially.

older cow with bad bag..but new heifer calf...what are the odds of her passing bad bag to new calf?

Good udders while they can be accidental seldom are. My point is if you want good to great udder structure on your cows you have to select for it. Buy your bulls from someone who cares about it as much or more than you do and it goes away in two generations. Poor udders are time killers.

Black Angus EPD Comparison Tool Site at "bullbarn.com"

I have never felt the need for this. Maybe there is something wrong with me. Numbers are nice and I use epds just never felt the need to trait maximize. I use the $ epds the same way. As far as feet epds go I use them very cautiously and need visual confirmation to evaluate.

    Ever seen this before?

I had one like that 3 years ago by an AI bull. I did report it to the Angus Association and the company that sold the semen.

    Ever seen this before?

The ones I have seen that live have some hair at birth like half a hair coat that is curly. I have only seen one completely hairless and it died in a snow bank. I will probably start a sheet storm by saying this but I believe all beef breeds in the US probably have a carrier in the gene pool. If...

    Ever seen this before?

It will not grow hair. Classic hypotrichosis genetic defect carried by sire and dam.

3rd Time is NOT a Charm

TC, I think if you used bulls with just a slightly higher birth epd your pelvic measurements would increase on your heifer calves. I don’t like claves much over 100 lbs but I think most all of us are leaving money on the table if we aim too low. It’s good that you have set standards for your...

3rd Time is NOT a Charm

Likely a higher calving ease direct bull will sire smaller calves so theoretically he will also sire smaller pelvises in his daughters. You want to use calving ease maternal for larger pelvic measurements theoretically. Not sure all the numbers are right when comparing calving ease sires though.

    Sperm count.

What one vet called 85 another might call 75 as it is a bit of a judgement call. BCS of the bull and current nutrition are important though.

    Retained Heifer Percentage ?

in a consistent herd you should be able to keep 2/3 of your heifers that look and perform mostly alike. Some breeds have more variation of type so that makes it harder to do and crossbreeding adds to the variability. I would look for bloodlines that show less variation of type. Select bulls...

    Synchronization

I would say there is a decent chance that by using lutalyse there is a decent chance that you are lowering your percent bred in 45 days In a natural service situation. I would look closer at nutrition, bcs and your bulls.

    Calf Variation ?

The female represents 50% genetics and all the environment. With that said I would say the bulls shares some of the responsibility also. Most prefer more bone unless it is a bull on virgin heifers.

Would you Use a bull that required assistance from a heifer

Everyone calves heifers a little differently. I have had heifers calf unassisted that should have been helped. Conversely I have intervened when I shouldn’t have. Blanket statements are not reality.

Would you Use a bull that required assistance from a heifer

Wow, I didn’t know cattle could gestate that long. 280 pretty well catches everything here on the high end. Calving ease bulls start calving 270 days.

    Retained or.....

We calf several hundred cows a year. We have never lost a cow to it that I remember but we do feed a good chelated mineral and keep our cows in good body condition so if we have a retained placenta they have the immune system to handle it. Nutrition plays a huge role in immune response.

    Retained or.....

I would say placenta broke apart or tore apart before she cleaned completely. I would say most of time they still will clean on their own in the first 24 hours. Most vets do not recommend doing anything about a true retained placenta unless the cow looks feverish or goes off feed.

    Claw or Angle?

Some are genetically predispositioned to prolapse. Bad feet tend to make it a reality sooner than later. I haven’t seen a vaginal prolapse in our herd for several years but we use to get 3 to 5 a year. I don’t miss sewing them up even a little bit. The labor end of the cow calf business is...

    Claw or Angle?

Prolapse and bad feet go hand in hand. One problem exacerbates the other.

    Claw or Angle?

I don’t necessarily think some hook is bad. Any overbook is obviously a problem. Hoof wall structure is important and if you don’t have it, well you don’t have much. I have mixed feelings as to how much the foot epds will help. It should identify the really bad ones and get them out of...

Rainfall or Enhance ? President or Elation?

Branded, the problem I referenced with corn is it is not getting planted. Tomorrow is the planting deadline here in SD. Suffice it to say 60% of the SD crop won’t get planted. Lots of problems other places also. This will have a major effect on feeder cattle prices. It is hard for commercial...
