    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

I wonder if the barns selling calves in groups has to do with the size of the ranches in the area. Lots of ranches under 40 hd in Texas. Also most in our area calve year around. I'd guess most ranches North of Oklahoma have a defined breeding season so they can sell in tighter groups. I'm just...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

Here in my area of NE Texas there are 6 salebarns within an hour drive of my house. A couple have 2 sales a week but most have 1 sale. I'd guess the sales have 700-1,200 each week. Most of the time they seem to start at noon and end around 5-6 pm. Every now and then they'll have a big run and...

    Weaning calves early?

Are you giving the calves hay or do they have plenty of ruffage to go with 16-18% feed? We feed the yearlings and cows the same feed so tried 18% and it scoured the yearlings and had them eating the bark off a tree. Because of this we feed everything 14% feed. The yearlings get very little if...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

Are you selling the big calves privately as freezer beef or selling to packers? How long are y'all feeding these calves and how old are they at finished weight? I see you said 12 months but not sure if that's age or time on feed. I don’t think we could get a calf to 1,350# at 12 months of age...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

We send 1 truck load of mixed heifers & steers every year. They sort and sell them in groups at the sale. We guarantee them open and it's up to the buyer to preg them. Anything that's bred sells the next day at the cow sell. We've had 2 come up bred so far. The bred ones sell for less but not...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

Kenny, heifers are a tough deal. We guarantee ours open and they generally bring a dime back from the steers. I think the best we've done is 7 cents back. When I wasn't guaranteeing them they'd bring 20 cents back. This year was different and I don’t think we did as well even thought they were...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

@Brute 23 I'm really glad you did this and kept up with the numbers the way you did. Everytime we tell someone if they want to improve profits on the ranch they need to start retaining or backgrounding their calves we get the same old crazy look. The two reasons we get are #1 it cost money and...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

@Brute 23 We weaned first week in December this year. Calves avg weight I'd guess at 475#. We fed 8# a day until March 15th then tapered off to a few days a week. Our feed cost was $310 a ton so around $1.25 a day per hd. So I'd guess $125-130 per hd in feed and another $6 in shots at weaning...

How long will a commodity mix last in a grain bin?

We've got a 30 ton bin but only order 12 tons at a time since we only feed about 1,000# a day. To me it seems like after 4-6 weeks the feed looses it's freshness and gets stale. It probably still has it's original feed value though and the cows eat it just the same. We've had feed in there for...

    Feeding calves for weaning/ holding

We hand feed 7-8# a day 14% commodity mix. Very little to no hay and they do fine. We do have a 3C creep feeder that can be loaded from a truck feeder. Think it holds a ton. You could limit them this way by just not feeding them but how much you want them to eat.

Feeder for loose feed, auger feeder?

I've tried T&S, Bull One, Hydrafeeder, Deweze and a few others. I'd go with Hydrafeeder, Deweze, or 3c Feeders. They are a little pricey but worth it. With the Deweze and Hyrafeeder U won't need scales. All others we tried really needed scsles to be accurate. Try to find a good used one. It's...

    Gains on thin calves

I'd say thin calves with frame will be fine. A dink is a dink though. I've got 3 that are a year old and might go 500#. Should have culled them months ago but they not hurting anything so not really worth the trouble.

    Incorporating Stockers- Any advice Welcome!

If you are planning to feed them I'd have a nice easy set up if you don't already. A truck feeder, bulk bin, and troughs would be first on the list. We can feed, count, and look ours in the eye in about 10 minutes. This makes a big difference in fighting sickness and calming them down. We built...

    Hay prices

If I remember right prices pre 2020 were $24-27. To me hay and hay baling prices have been flat for a good time now. It's been $24-29 custom and $35-40 for rolled hay for along while now.

    Hay prices

I was told the guys custom baling hay in my area are going to charge a little different in 2023. If I remember right it's going to be $32 a bale for 4x6's and an hourly rate for anything less than two bales an acre. I'm guessing they need at least 2 bales an acre to be profitable. I believe they...
