Beets and or turnips for cattle feed

I grow turnips every year. Cattle were slow to eat them at first. After they got started, they like them. I have had a cow choke on one of the bulbs, but she got it out before I got a rope on her.

    Ration question

Get a beef weight tape. While not totally accurate, they can give you an idea how much weight they are gaining.

    finishing heifers

Nothing is wrong with a 1000 lbs. in my opinion. Nice tender young beef, brings people back next year. You sell 1500 lbs, people don't have freezer space. Bill is a lot higher. They don't need beef next year unless they are big beef eaters.

    Feed Barley ?

95% of corn, and a whole lot cheaper to grow. Makes for nice white fat too. I use it for 1/4 of my ration.

Feed Rations for John Deere 750

Find an older miller, tell him what you have available for feed. Ask him what he would recommend. Most will come up with a simple ration, amount of minerals, salt, and vitamins, that will save you the cost of a pro.

1st time growing out a calf for slaughter

I pull mine off grass 100 days prior to slaughter. Then feed a small amount of grain ration to start. I make my own ration. One half corn, 1 quarter barley, and 1 quarter oats. Increase grain weekly until they don't eat it all.

    Butcher beef price

If your charging 2.30 hanging, you are charging the customer 3.83. plus processing. Only about 60% of hanging weight is what the customer takes home. 8% moisture loss, removal of bones, trimmed fat= 40 % gone.

    How much meat to expect???

A little over 400 lbs is what I would figure. Depending on hang time you lose about 8% in moisture, then depending on bone in, or bone out cuts. Customers do not know that when you take out the bones, and the water evaporates, you lose weight. They think, if they bought 500 lbs hanging weight...

How much land does it take for beef cows?

I was able to keep a beef, and a half (Angus) for each Holstein dairy cow I had. Had to buy some feed sometimes for the dairy cows, I don't buy for the beef. If you had Dairy cows, figure one and one half beef per cow, then go from there'

    Raising Bulls

I don't raise bulls, but sell corn to a guy that raises only bulls. No females around, so they seem to get along. Only minor fighting that I've seen.

Hay Feeder Wagons: Pros and Cons

The feeders with the extra bars inside (cone feeders) do save some hay, the cows don't pull their heads out so often. I like the J & L Haysavers. One of mine has the Grader tire on the bottom, so the bottom won't rot out even if it is in manure all year long. They are not cheap, but I think...

anyone made their own creep feeder?

I made one several years ago, I came across some conduit, excess on a job I was on. It was 10 ft long. I made 2 squares, and cut some conduit in half, and welded one square on top of the other. That made it 5 ft high. Then I closed 3 sides in with heavy woven wire fencing. I made a bar to...

    Grazing Fall Triticale

I grazed triticale last fall and into winter, it didn't seem to hurt it, but I didn't harvest it for grain.

    Free Choice Corn Silage?

I feed corn silage for the past 3 years, I like it, easy to feed, saves hay. I quit this year because, in a feeder wagon, you can't control what they eat. Some cows overeat, and get very fat.
