    Too close for comfort.

I think we all should have stayed in bed today. You got hurt. Thankfully you’re ok. I woke up to a herd of my cows out in a 45 acre field of nearly hip high ryegrass (made it real fun trying to run/walk/hobble through), neighbor had cows out, too, my bull butted the front fender in in my truck...

    Red Wattle Pigs

Easy to keep them in a hot wire. Be sure to train them to it. I have a pen surrounded by hog panels with an electric fence set about 16” inside. When learning the electric fence, they will almost always run through the fence instead of backing away from it. It usually takes about a week for them...

    Hay feeder mess?

Hijacking this thread a little, but has anyone else compared bale placement when using rings? I’ve noticed that when I put the 1 bale on its end, and another one horizontal, the cows almost always go to the upright one first. I wonder if it is because they can pull the hay apart easier??

    Daily Chuckle

I wanted to make sure my wife woke up with a big smile this morning. Now, I’m not allowed to have sharpies in the house anymore.

    Hay feeder mess?

I’ve got some places that I feed bales with rings on pasture, they get moved each feeding. Other places, I feed on concrete. Try to scrape the pads off every 7-10 days, and pile the mess up to spread later. Other places, I unroll. I usually pull a drag across where the rings were after I finish...

    Valentines

Hit it lucky. My wife had her first lambs of the year born today. That sure did make her happy. Not happy enough to forget it was Valentine’s Day, but at least I didn’t have to open the gates tonight!

    Rain in the south

Ain’t it amazing how much tougher we all are? Last week we had on coveralls and sweatshirts to do our chores. This week, we’re just in our shirtsleeves and raincoats

    Which describes you?

I use plastic twine. I remove mine. I’ve found that using an old hay hook (made for square bales) really helps me get the strings off. Also, with frozen bales, it’s easier to remove the strings if you place the bale on its end and “walk the strings around the bale”.

How do you call the cows

I’m the same way, SBMF. I’ve got herds that are across the road from each other and some that the pastures adjoin. Each herd has their own unique call. But it is confusing!

Lets see your oldest piece of equipment that is still in use

I’ve got too many pieces to provide photos of, but I can list my “fleet”. Anything I list as 1 owner is something that my granddaddy bought and has now passed to me. 1972 Cherokee gooseneck livestock trailer - 1 owner 1972 Ford 4000su with loader, tach has rolled twice. Currently showing 7700+...

    Back surgery?

Please forgive me but this is going to be a long post. I’ve been plagued by back problems since I was in middle school (I’m currently 36, so at least 25 years). Admittedly, some of my ailments are self inflicted, some are genetics, and some are wear and tear. I’ve had over 70 epidurals, both...

    Anybody sell any pork?

I sold pork, as well as pigs and hogs, for many years. I now just sell live animals. I vendored at farmers markets so I sold mostly by the pound instead of by halves or quarters. I will say that it really is an expensive venture, especially on the small scale. Typically, you’ll get weaned pigs...

    Persimmon Seed forecasting

I’ve seen tons of woolly worms here. They’re just as confused as the weathermen are. No 2 are even remotely similar. All brown, all black, brown head and tail with black in the middle, black on both ends with brown in the middle, etc. I will say, I’d never heard about the knife in a persimmon...
