    Steers not shedding

I have the same problem. Yearlings are slow to shed. Next year, they will be ok.

    Ag Lime Palatability

I used to mix it with my feed, but I only used 25 lbs per ton. Cows eat it the same either with or without the lime.

Does anyone make your own cattle feed?

I use homegrown Ear Corn, Oats, Barley, and roasted Soybeans. Run it through my grinder mixer. Add minerals. A nutritionist came up with the amounts of each per ton of feed. I use it for finishing as well as maintenance.

    Cows Getting Flu

Just went to a funeral yesterday. A former neighbor's daughter. Tried to treat the flu with OTC drugs. Watched her grow up. 42 years old. I guess her health was not the best anyway.

    one teat not giving milk

A three teater really won't hurt anything but looks. They still have enough milk for a calf.

If it isn't moldy. Feed it.

7wk old Red Angus Bottle Calf

The reason that calf is not eating is because she's getting twice the milk replacer required. Two quarts a feeding is plenty, then she will start eating grain.

    Preventing Bloat - naturally?

As long as your pasture is mostly grass they won't bloat. I would not turn hungry cows on pure alfalfa, but grass won't be a problem.

    Molasses Alternatives ?

I have never fed molasses. Too hard to get in a grinder mixer. I'm sure the cows would like it. Dry molasses is a lot higher priced than liquid. The cows would eat faster, but they have all day, so it's just an expense I don't need.

How long should a bottle fed calf be on milk replacer for?

I keep them on it for 6 weeks at least. I know some wean earlier, and I don't like the cost, but they do better on milk replacer. If it's eating feed now, wean it.

    Prolapse?

Had a vaginal prolapse last spring, the vet put a aluminum spike with a plastic washer through the vaginal wall and to the outside. Used a hairpin clip to hold it in place. She calved without a problem. A week later we took the spike out and she's still good. Don't know what this spring will bring.

    Ritchie Waterer

Why does Richie not put the drain in the bottom of their waterers? I scrub mine with a stiff brush and cleaner, but then you can't drain the crap out.

    Baleage and Botulism

There was a mention of Botulism with baleage. Seveal years ago I lost 4 cows to botulism from baleage. I sent samples from the hay, it was tested negitive. I was told it comes from hay that has been rained on when wilted. Does anyone know how this happens? Why are not all bales affected? People...

If you didn't give that calf some electrolites, and get him hydrated, he will not brighten up very fast.

    Bottle Calf Question

All the Milk Replacer I've used calls for 2 qt. twice a day. Do not use cheap replacer. Get milk replacer made from milk. I have not used that scours medicine, I don't know how good it is. Re read your directions, I'll bet it calls for 2 qt. twice a day.

    Dust bag

I use them along with other fly control. They work for awhile, then draw damp, and don't work. If I spent more time taking care of them it would be better.

I don't insure individual cows, but my farm policy has blanket, if I lose a large number at once.

    Cow tore bottom eyelid off

I have a 4 yr old cow that somehow tore her bottom eyelid off, it's hanging by a thread. I didn't get the vet because it had freeze dried when I found it. I didn't think it could be sewed on and saved. There is no infection yet. I doubt if she can close her eye when it heals. I have searched for...
