    Passive Income From Your Ranch

This is interesting. Some facts and some questions: This property was sitting idle for a long time. Cattle and donkeys have been here for a while (no more cows now). Would a soil test help determine any issue(s)? How does one replace nutrients? What does resting a pasture do -- and for...

    Passive Income From Your Ranch

This is what I did last year: I had someone come to mow and bale all he could get off of the property, mostly round bales. He gave me some square bales for my three donkeys and he took all the rest of the hay. This worked out fine for me because he provided all the necessary fuel to do this...

Do any of you have a solution to needle/syringe storage?

When I worked for the vets, they simply had boxes of various needles and syringes on their trucks (locked up at night); they also had Sharps containers on the truck for the used needles; used syringes went into a trash container on the truck, emptied daily. The office also had a Sharps...

Georgia farmer attacked by a rabid cow

The poor fella...heck of a way to end your cattle career, isn't it? In 2011, Virginia had 11 confirmed cases of rabies in cows.

    Calves and different personalities.

I imagine the first group probably had more time around calm and quiet people who slowly approached them bearing gifts (food!). The second group is most likely frightened but might ease into it with time when they catch on and realize there's nothing to fear (and they're in a new place too).

    Lutalyse

I'm not sure, but I bet dun or cow pollinator and some others will know. If not, then you can always call Pfizer: http://animalhealth.pfizer.com/sites/pa ... actus.aspx

    Pink eye

OK, I see....you're referring to what they show in the last picture of that document I posted. Thanks for explaining.

    Pink eye

bhb, perhaps you might have more hands-on experience with this than I do, but wouldn't the eye quickly wash out any medication that was squirted into it? I seem to recall that this was mentioned in a vet lecture on pinkeye that I attended. I think it's the injection of the LA200 (SQ in the...

    Pink eye

This is the key. Here's a website that shows photos of the various stages. Maybe this will help. http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/400/400-750/400-750.html

    textbook vs real-life with cows

herofan, you might check around in your area for a regional cattle association and/or your county extension agent. Often these organizations offer courses that might be helpful to you. I took a cow/calf course through the local extension agent and really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Books...

cow can't stand after having calf, but has leg movement

Calving paralysis? Here's a very short article about it with a few suggestions about what you can do. You could also search on Cattle Today for more information. I would contact the vet and get some advice: http://livestock.iptime.org:8000/~lives ... F/F110.htm

What do you weigh your calves with?

I use a bathroom scale placed on a small piece of plywood to level it. I weigh myself, give mom a bucket of grain, then I pick up the calf and weigh both of us together. Sadly, I have no way to get weights later on.

Let us know how peaceful it becomes once the bull leaves. I think you're doing the right thing by the way.

Bull Trying to Hurt Calf.....Little Help, Please

Well, yeah, I guess so. I cured him of messing with the hay ring by zapping him with a water pistol right on the nose (I hid on the other side of the bale) so he didn't know it was me (yeah, right!). I'm thinking about digging a hole to put the mineral feeder in. I'm beginning to think that...

Bull Trying to Hurt Calf.....Little Help, Please

I agree with those who say keep cow and calf penned separately until the bull leaves. It's not worth the risk, especially when you have only a few...each calf is important. They will be fine with hay, water, etc. The bull has company (other cow and 7 month calf) that he's not bothering...

Will Pepsi hurt my bottle calf?

:lol2: (I mentioned the sign cause I think here we're required to have a sign that the fence is electric. And these days, if some kid got shocked, they'd probably turn around and sue the fence owner and win!)
