Kingsville, Texas Despite hot temperatures more than one hundred seventy junior Santa Gertrudis members traveled to Mercedes, Texas to compete in the 2006 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show, June 19-23, 2006. The week long event brought juniors and their families to the valley of Texas from 12 different states including: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas. Juniors that week showed three hundred fifty-seven Santa Gertrudis females. Of those, seventy-six females were bred and owned and competed in that respective show. The Santa Gertrudis Star Five (percentage female) continues to grow with forty-one entries. Along with that juniors competed in leadership contests ranging from public speaking to brain bowl. During the awards banquet the National Santa Gertrudis Youth Foundation awarded eleven scholarships this year totaling more than $17,000 to graduating Santa Gertrudis seniors.

The female Santa Gertrudis show saw juniors competing for nineteen donated heifers, belt buckles, premiums and much more. The donated heifer program awards a heifer, donated by various ranches, to each class winner in the purebred Santa Gertrudis female show. The donated heifer program also awards the best of polled female; champion bred and owned and champion star five with donated females.

The purebred females were judged on Thursday, June 22nd with Mr. Jim Reeves, Brenham, Texas doing the honors. Judge Reeves selected Miss Double TT 22, sired by Mr. TT Intimidator 79 as the Grand Champion Female of the 2006 NJSGHS. The September 2005 born female exhibited by Lauren Miller, Scurry, Texas, was also named the calf champion female. Lauren's heifer donor for her class winning female is Ferman Tullous, Texas. The Reserve Grand Champion Female, ES 39, sired by Cedar Crest Apache Poll 15/9, was exhibited by Logan Fulton, Sanger, Texas. The July 2003 female was also named the Senior Champion Female. Logan's heifer donor for his class winning entry is Double TT Ranch, Texas.

Champion and Reserve Champion Division winners were all class winners as well, results listed below include the heifer donors: Reserve Champion Heifer Calf, Whiskey 51, sired by Sam Houston 30, 5/5/2005, exhibited by Logan Fulton, Sanger, Texas, 2006 Heifer Donor: Minix Cattle Co, Texas; Champion Junior Heifer Calf, Miss Double TT 8/5, sired by Mr. TT Crookhorn Joe 227, 2/19/2005, exhibited by Perry Bass, II, Kingsville, Texas, 2006 Heifer Donor: Strait Ranches, Texas; Reserve Champion Junior Heifer Calf, Liberty Ranch 53/032 (2005 Donated Heifer), sired by Medicine Man 51/7, 3/29/2005, exhibited by Paul Wunderlich, Brenham, Texas, 2006 Heifer Donor: Garrett & Makinley Brooks, Mo.; Champion Yearling Heifer, Miss Double TT 4, sired by R8's King 1, 7/8/2004, exhibited by Ben Hughes, Newton, Texas, D Bar J Ranch, Texas; Reserve Champion Yearling Heifer, TG Topanga 450, sired by Partner 5273, 9/7/2004, exhibited by Abby Loessin, Robstown, Texas, 2006 Heifer Donor: NAF Cattle Division, Texas; Reserve Senior Champion Female, Miss Kitty 8548, sired by Sheriff 5577, 2/1/2004, exhibited by Allison Grainger, Brenham, Texas, 2006 Heifer Donor: Vesper Ranches, Texas.

The second day of showing saw Mr. Tommy Schwertner, Liberty Hill, Texas sort through the best of polled class, bred and owned females and Star Five percentage females. In the Best of Polled show over 120 purebred females competed for the honor of Best of Polled female, when it was all done, ES 39, exhibited by Logan Fulton, Sanger, Texas walked away with the honors. The female ES 39, is sired by Cedar Crest Apache Poll 15/9, with a date of birth of 7/2/2003. The 2006 Heifer Donor for the Best of Polled class is Lazy E Ranch, Texas. Mr. Schwertner then sorted through the seventy-six bred and owned females. Championship honors went to KJ 1/4, sired by Briggs 097/00. The 4/20/2004, female was exhibited by Kelsey Jones, Bloomington, Texas. The 2006 Heifer Donor was Wendt Ranch, Texas. The Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Female was exhibited by Jeremy McMillan, Purdue Hill, Alabama. His female McMillan 57/5, sired by Turkey Trot Ranch 18/9 is a 12/1/2004 female. The ever growing Star Five female show had forty-one entries for Judge Schwertner to evaluate. This year coming out on top was Ramona Bass, Kingsville, Texas with her entry SJ 4/18, the 1/3/2004 female was produced by a Santa Gertrudis female and a Hereford sire. The 2006 Heifer Donor is Charles, Dena and Charles H. Frieda, Texas. The Reserve Champion Star Five Female honor went to Lauren Miller, Scurry, Texas. Lauren's female Miss TT 514, the 1/11/2005 female was also produced by a Santa Gertrudis female and a Hereford sire.
