BREEDERS SHOWCASE 630 HEREFORDS IN DENVER

KANSAS CITY, Mo. � The Hereford breed showcased the largest breed show at the 2007 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. There were more than 630 Herefords competing at the 101st NWSS, including 485 entries on the Hill in the open and junior shows and seven loads and 29 pens in the Yards.

The Hereford activities got underway with the 99 head junior show on Jan. 11 followed by the pen and carload show that same day. Herefords took center stage on the Hill with the open females showing on Jan. 12 and the bulls on Jan. 13. Doug Satree, Montague, Texas, judged the open cattle on the Hill and Walt McKellar, Senatobia, Miss. sorted the junior entries. Doug Gerber, Richmond, Ind., Vance Uden, Franklin, Neb., and Robbie Hamilton, Wharton, Texas, teamed up to evaluate the bulls in the Yard show.

Last year's national champion horned female, BR Gabrielle 5082 by BR Lansing 3060, claimed her spot in NWSS history as she was crowned the two-time national champion horned female for National Junior Hereford Association member, Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas. Gabrielle was also selected supreme champion Hereford. The supreme trophy is sponsored by Four L Hereford Farm, Atwood, Tenn., and is awarded in memory of Tom Lane Sr. Gabrielle posted an impressive set of expected progeny differences (EPDs) on show day including birth weight (BW) 3.0; weaning weight (WW) 49; yearling weight (YW) 84; milk (MM) 23; and milk and growth (M&G) 48.

In the polled bull show, LaGrand Reload 80P ET by AA PRF Wideload claimed the grand champion bronze bull trophy and purple banners for his owners LaGrand Hereford Ranch, Freeman, S.D.; Heritage Cattle Co., Buhl, Idaho; Perks Ranch, Rockford, Ill.; and Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla. Reload weighed 2,390 lb., scanned a fat thickness (FT) of .48 inches of backfat and had a scrotal circumferance of 39.5 cm. The senior champion bull showed with EPDs of BW 5.0; WW 50; YW 79; MM 19; and M&G 44.

SR CG Hard Rock 5073 followed Reload into the winner's circle and was slapped

yearling champion and reserve grand champion polled bull. The DB Hard Drive ET son is owned by Carl and Charles Gray, Edmond, Okla., and Sellman Ranch, Crawford, Neb. Hard Rock weighed 2,285 lb. on show day and scanned FT .50 inches and measured 41 cm scrotal circumferance. His EPDs read BW 6.5; WW 47; YW 84; MM 19 and M&G 42.

A year after winning the spring calf division, SLDK Poseidon R09 ET topped the horned bull show as he was slapped yearling and grand champion overall. Sladek Farms, Iowa City, Iowa; Bert and Beverly Wall, Plainview, Texas; and Poseidon Syndicate, Iowa City, Iowa, own the Ankonian Midas 72 son. Poseidon weighed 2,140 lb. on show day, scanned FT .46 inches and had a 41.5 cm scrotal measurement. His EPDs read BW 3.8: WW 44; YW 69; MM 19; and M&G 41.

Hoffman Herefords, McArthur, Calif., and Ankony Farms, Clarkesville, Ga., dominated the polled female show by exhibiting both grand and reserve females. The intermediate and grand champion female BC Maid of Gold 2R by C �S Pure Gold 98170 is co-owned with Derel Azevedo, Turlock, Calif., and Shayne Meyers, Colusa, Calif. Her EPDs read BW 4.8; WW 48; YW 77; MM 19; and M&G 44. SB 2013 Lady 90S ET by HB STAR Battleground 2013 won reserve grand champion female honors. The spring heifer calf showed with EPDs of BW 4.1; WW 43; YW 68; MM 25; and M&G 46.

Taking home the reserve grand champion banner in the horned bull show was B&C Cattle Co., Miami, Texas, with B&C Mr Austin Lane. B&C's bull was reserve to Poseidon in the strong yearling division and weighed 2,255 lb., scanned FT .30 inches and had a scrotal measurement of 41 cm. The Remitall Online 122L son posted EPDs of BW 5.4; WW 62; YW 108; MM 16 and M&G 47.

Following Gabrielle in the horned female show and claiming the reserve grand champion banner was Hayley Miller, Thorntown, Ind., with MH Gold Miss Online 5324 ET. The Remitall Online 122L daughter posted EPDs of BW 5.3; WW 58; YW 96; MM 18; and M&G 47.

At the end of the two-day show on the Hill Four L Hereford Farm and Star Lake Cattle Ranch were in the spotlight as they exhibited the best six head in the horned and polled shows respectively. The winning continued for Four L and Star Lake as they claimed both premier breeder and exhibitor awards in the horned and polled shows. Four L also won the Get of Sire Award in the horned show with a group sired by Four L Gold Strike 1127.

Brother and sister duo, Mark and Catie Sims, Elgin, Okla., and Devin Murnin, Ft Collins, Colo., made headlines in the junior shows. The Sims siblings showed the champion polled female, MCS 59N Romance 14R that went on to win the junior yearling division in the open show. STAR KKH Valedictorian 298S ET shown by Kasey Herman, Skiatook, Okla., was reserve in the polled junior show. Murnin showed the champion horned heifer, H SIERRA 6037 ET and Jackson Alexander, Anadarko, Okla., exhibited the reserve horned heifer, TCL Moolah Maker.
