Yes, the carbon can burn out of the steel causing poor sparking. Looks great to the eye but under compression it fails.

I've have the same IR/Honda wheelbarrow compressor and it is acting like your unit. I've gone thru the carb and nozzle with same results that you have. Please post up your fix. I guess new fuel line is next for me.

I have a GCV160 on my wood splitter. It's always been cranky, needs to run on 1/2 choke for about 10 minutes until it warms up because it's jetted so lean.
