June cut 2016 vs late July cut 2017

Postby Jeanne - Simme Valley » Fri Nov 17, 2017 12:28 pm

I realize that I should get my hay tested, but easier said than done out here.
We put up baleage in mid June every year (very consistant). Most all mixed grasses - little clover. If any Timothy, just coming out of boot.
This year, RAIN, non stop - May, June & into July.
Finally able to do baleage late July. Some grasses pollinating.
I have over 100 bales of 2016 baleage cut in mid June.
"Normally" every time I do get hay tested, it's about 16% protein. I have to "assume" the 2017 hay would be lower protein.
So, question is, would the 2016 hay lose protein? more than the 5 weeks of extra growth on 2017 hay?
All of it smells great. Cattle consuming great. Would just like to feed the BEST to my replacement heifers & nursing c/c pairs.
What's your opinion???

Have it tested, the rest is pure speculation.
