Hi everyone. First off, I want to say up front that I'm not a cattle producer, never have been, and, given my circumstances in life, likely never will be. I have had a little experience, although many years ago.
My aunt and uncle had a small dairy and beef operation in WI where I spent my summers and a couple of years after high school. Helped pull a few calves (Holsteins), had a close call with a bull (another Holstein), etc. Nothing most of you haven't done a million times. Learned a lot about hard work, responsibility, life in general. Went to college, studied animal science, didn't graduate, and ended up going down another path.
Anyway, I've always loved cattle, especially the genetics part. Loved it when the AI guy came around and left the newest bull catalouge.
For some reason I got a hair up my rear a couple of months ago and decided to check out a couple of websites and have been going crazy ever since. Breed associations, seedstock websites etc. The more I learn, the more I realize I want to learn more. Not that I'll ever put it to good use, but I sure love to talk about it!
So, after boring my wife to death with all this the past couple of months, I decided to jump in here and join the club. Have been reading the posts for awhile and have even gone back and read many of the old ones. Sure wish I had access to the ones that were deleted. :D I won't have much to offer in the way of advice except conversation, and I won't try to impress anyone or be something I'm not. My opinions may not carry much weight with some of you, but I'll put in my 2 cents worth once in awhile anyway. You'll probably see me lurking around the breeds board most of the time. Anyway, I'm ready to have some fun.
P.S. I can't begin to tell you how much respect I have for what you folks do and how you do it. (And my family eats a helluva lot of beef!)
