Walmart closing Sams that are not performing to expectations is the same as we do with the cow herd. We cull the non-performers.

That is more likely.

Amazon and the internet is crushing retail stores.
Several of the locations closed will be re-purposed as distribution centers for shipping internet orders.

I always like Sam's Club, and I'm not too fond of Costco. Costco just doesn't seem to have much to offer in the way of food I like. When we moved out here the local Sam's Club shut down. We had just renewed our membership before we moved b/c we knew about the one out here. When I called to get a refund they stated they didn't want to do that b/c there was another location we could go to. That location was 4 hours away. I tried to explain that, and it took a good 10+ minutes to get it through their head that I was not driving 4 hours one way to go to their store. I did get my money back, but I also understood why they might have been closing some stores.

in KY those stores are always busy as thats the only spot most people can go within a 30 min. drive.

I see they have built quite a few like that in a lot of places around here, and like you say they seem to have a lot of traffic in and out in a days time. Pass by one outside of Sharpsburg, and once in a while off the AA outside of Tollesboro, there is always several vehicles at both of them. We now have 3 Dollar Generals in Winchester, one is within 4 miles. We also have a Family Dollar and a Dollar Tree in town too.

I did not think the Dollar Generals and stuff are cheaper... just more convenient. A lot of people do not do a large shopping trip once a week or what ever. They buy smaller amounts multiple times a week.

bball wrote:I believe I read somewhere that internet shopping outlets such as Amazon are really hurting Sam's and Wal-Mart. Ever increasing number of web shoppers. Becomes expensive maintaining an actual storefront vs. just a warehouse. Looks like Amazon is doing Sam's the same way Sam did all those mom and pop places across the nation. Classic example of how if you do not have your finger on the pulse of the consumer in today's climate, you can go from the top of the pile to fading into irrelevance rather quickly...it is proposed that the vast majority of us will order virtually everything via the web over the next decade, including our groceries. One of the reasons a career in logistics is considered highly promising. I mean groceries delivered to your door, not like Kroger does now where you can send them your list, then go pick up your grocery order already bagged and waiting.

It has been rumored that the business like Dollar General have put the pedal to the floor on expansion in hopes of Amazon buying them out.

Sams is really trying to keep up with the electronic age. I now buy my items BEFORE leaving my home (the stuff I know I always buy), and they have it in a cart ready for me to load and go when I get there. I like to quickly look around inside when I arrive, at the clothes and new stuff, and when I do that I use "Scan and Go", so again, no line waiting. I buy it before I walk up front, and just show the gal at the door my electronic receipt and out I go.
When we lived in CA, I preferred the Costco. When we moved out here 11 years ago, I had no choice and had to use Sams (no Costco around). I am glad none of the Sams around me are closing!

I've never been in a sams club, costco or any of the stores with dollar in their name. But I do use Amazon a lot.

Apparently we'd be lost without them...they cram one in every hole they can find... And don't wast money on land it appears... Ones even got cat tails growing around it

If it wasn't for Amazon I wouldn't be able to get any books worth reading. Costco does have a book section, but it's all popular stuff that isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Several years ago I got a kindle paperwhite (just like reading a book). I read about a book or book and a half a day. All free via amazon prime.

I went into a Sam's once and started to fill out the paperwork to become a member, but stopped when it got to the part about the price for an annual membership. I just couldn't make myself pay them money for the privilege of shopping in their store.

They're building a $Gen store right now about 3 miles from me. I bet there ain't 100 people living within miles of it.
Drive 3 more miles and you're at HEB and Walmart.

They have them stuck in every rural crossroads or community around here.
Looks to me they are a prime crack head robbery target.
I wouldn’t want to be an employee in one.

They don't have and probably don't have much need for a big parking lot. Even the 3 dollar stores in town never have more than 4-5 people in them at any one time and that's a generous estimate. I don't know how they stay in business.
