Question for mountian people.

Postby angie » Fri Jul 13, 2007 8:21 pm

OK, the song "Play Me Some Mountain Music" has a phrase in it that goes "playin' baseball, skinnin' cats". What on earth is skinnin' cats? Have asked bunches of people and have been asked several times. Big bar discussion once. Several locals think it means exactly what it says ~ people are skinnin cats. I say no one can be that mean and if they were they sure wouldn't sing about it. Any answers out there? I would love to be the one in the know for once! Thanks ~

"Skinnin' Cats" is when you reach up and grab an overhead object like a tree limb or barn rafter and bring your feet up between your arms and over your head while doing a complete somersault and land back on your feet again.

Kind of a gymnastic type thing.

Then again, there's more than one way to skin a cat. ;-)

It's an Alabama thang, but I'll splain it to you as best I can.

Years ago, during the great depression, MikeC's family was very cold one Winter. Therefore, MikeC set out to keep his family warm, and skinned all the family's cats, to make clothing for himself, and his family. It's never quite stopped, down in the Heart of Dixie.Summer boredom= more cats need skinnin'. I hope I splained it in EZ to understand terms...

I can only think of a handful of folks (wimmens) I know in Alabama that could ever come close to being gymnastic-ly inclined. Most of them are probably married now with 4 or 5 kids.

According to the first edition of Beefy's Georgia Dictionary the term "skinning cats" is defined as the following: (verb) to clean catfish.
