How wide does a water lane need to be leading up to a pond for 100 or so head?

Depends a lot on how well it is built up and drained. Graded with hard surfaces are often 8 to 12 feet wide. I have some unimproved lanes that are 14 to 16 feet wide, but they are a mess in the spring...

Polywire on a least one side would give you some flexibility.

Wider than the equipment that you will use to keep it working but not less than 12' for that number.

Would make it at least 20 ft wide but think 30 ft better. Another possibility is 2 parallel lanes say 20 ft each but only use 1 at a time so have a spare for those long wet spells. Maybe 2 barbed wire fences 40 ft apart with poly wire dividing it in half. Certainly think too wide is better than too narrow

Make sure it is wide enough to easily get equipment down it. Cattle will go down a 6' lane if they have to - you cannot!!!
