Why are you selling the week of a holiday? Most of the barns are closed this week because the calf order buyers are taking off for the holidays.

5 wts here today .85 - 1.06 but run was light and not really a true market test as most were just groups of 2-4 head
of oddballs and or not vaccinated, though there were occasional good ones in the mix.

Good luck. My experience has been that the first sale after a closed week is usually a good one.

He sold last Monday. Most of the major order buyers were out. I look for the market to open strong Monday.

Size wise, they were pretty uniform - quite a lot of price difference, solid black vs bwf.

Likely more than Bwf versus solid Blk determined the price differential.

They weighed more then I thought but thought I would get a little more for them.

Selling calves right before a holiday is risky. A lot of buyers were out all week because their customers didn't want to take in cattle over the holidays. Market will return to normal this week.

Forty to fifty years ago, sale barns would close on Thanksgiving and many the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving. Now most markets are closed for the whole week of a holiday.

One thing here in Va I have found, we never sell during rifle season. Too many buyers take off and too many places don't want to take cattle in. With the constant wet conditions all fall, there were alot of cattle the week before Thanksgiving, but not during Thanksgiving week. But that was not the norm. If you are gonna sell here, it needs to be by the first week of Nov or wait til the first week of Dec. And this year prices have just kept coming off so we are just going to wait for the first of the year. It might dry up by then too, so that we can get into some of the places. There are alot of farmers saying that they are holding til the first of the new year also, so it might not be a good decision. I think prices are not going to be much better, but maybe a little bit for the spring. I think we are in for a couple of pretty lean years.
