First Calf

Post by Bovine breeder » Mon Feb 11, 2019 8:36 pm

Started spring calving this morning with a bull calf by TJ Sharper Image. 271 day gestation. 65lb birth weight. His dam is a moderate frame cow who doesn’t seem to milk very heavily and usually weans an average calf. As Ebenezer said, she fits the environment and rebreeds in a timely manner, so I’m gonna wear her out raising crossbred calves. The goal with S.I. Was a bull calf and a terminal mating to add performance. Hope the rest of the season goes this well

An old tobacco barn. Good place for them. Do you have them locked in?

That’s my silver bullet for spring calving. They go in shortly before they calve, and get moved out to a new pasture after the calf is strong. They aren’t locked in the barn, they have access to it and two large lots around the barn. Spoiled calf has yet to come out into the rain

Not spoiled - smart! It has rained almost nonstop for about 48 hours here and we have another 12 to go.

Same here. It’s brutal.

Good start! Good luck with rest!
Even if it's a good weather some of our calves prefer to stay in the shed in their own pen. Comes out only for the milk and some activity and then comes back in. Some moms have to spend quite some time walking next to the pen and calling for the young ones to come out... They sure are spoiled...

Thanks! Hopefully all the terminal calves come out as bulls and all the maternal matings come out as heifers
