or as our Minnesota governor calls it.... Indigenous Peoples Day.

Original pledge (of allegiance) written by a union civil war veteran during time of surging European immigration.
"We give our heads and hearts to God and our country, one nation, one language, one flag!"

In 1892 Francis Bellamy rewrote it to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus arriving in America.
Bellamy felt the original version was "too juvenile and lacking in dignity."

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice
for all.

Bellamy was a socialist and his first draft used.... equality and fraternity with all.
Surprisingly he removed God from the pledge as he was also a minister.
Until 1923 schools would choose which version to teach children to recite.

In 1923 My was changed to the and Bellamy's version was adopted as the official version.
In 1954... of the United States of America and under God were added to the official version.
