frame size/cattle type based on owned or leased pasture

Yes sir, that dang sure needs to be taken into account. Where I am, we run on corn stalks through the winter paying on a per head per day basis.

frame size/cattle type based on owned or leased pasture

I agree with having smaller cows on land where you are getting to decide the stalking rate. That would be a case of making the land more efficient by weaning more pounds per acre. Where I'm from however, most lease situations the land owner tells you how many pair you can run, and you pay on a...

frame size/cattle type based on owned or leased pasture

Don't need a frame score 5 cow to get a frame score 5 calf. Exactly. I had this discussion with a gentleman yesterday. He raises purebreds, sells bulls, and was making his pitch as to why he needs those larger framed cows. I agree, in his situation he needs those larger framed cows if his...

frame size/cattle type based on owned or leased pasture

Has anybody every heard of or put any thought in to varying the size or type of cattle you run based on whether you own the land/pay a flat rate, or if you pay on a per head per day basis while on pasture? I'm not trying to beat the dead horse, but it goes along with the conversation of being...

How long to feed out a heifer?

Depending on her current condition, I would think 30-45 days on corn would finish her out if her body condition score is a 5-6. As far as pen size, 200 square feet of pen space/calf is what I have found is about average in an open air feedlot situation.

    Calves on corn stalks

Thank you for the reply, I had a nutritionist look at it last year and the best rate of gain he said we could get is 1.7 pounds per day on a self feeder (creep feeder) 30% corn 70% limiter ration at a cost of $1.18/day or $.69 per pound of gain. I'm just wondering if anybody is doing any...

    Calves on corn stalks

For those of you who run cattle on corn stalks, I'm wondering what kind of gains you get on calves on corn stalks. What are you using for supplement? Can you get 2 pounds a day out of weaned calves if they are supplemented right?

    Squeeze Chute

I would suggest anchoring it down. I know cattle are just supposed to walk into the chute, but they may have other ideas. Then when you get them caught they can dang sure thrash around. It will move on ya if either of these occur. We just have ours on the ground, and unless a person is...

When's a steer ready for the freezer?

Ideal market or finish weight is 1250-1300 lbs. Average dressing percentage on beef cattle is 60-65%. As far as feed goes calves should be on a diet to grow frame and muscle (30% corn or other concentrate, 70% roughage) when they are on the lighter side. Once they get closer to finish weight...

    New working system

The pens in the design are 32x60, 24x60, and the smaller pen by the chute would be 30x40. We would work 80-100 head through. When we work cattle we generally work either cows or calves hardly ever both on the same day. My thoughts with the gates at the end of the alley, toward the arena, is...

    New working system

Alley is 12 foot wide and around 80 foot long. With a gate in the middle you would only be walking 40 feet. As far as the right angles go, cattle are gonna ball up in any corner there is, unless you make everything round with no corners they will ball up. I worked calves in a hundred thousand...

    New working system

Most the time once we get them corralled we will sort and work on foot.

    New working system

Here is a picture of the whole pen set up. https://postimg.cc/MMrZFXxm Horse runs coming off the barn, the pen behind the roping boxes would act as a pen for roping cattle, unless working cows. I haven't put it in yet, but the overhead half way down the alley would have a gate on it. All...

    New working system

The wife and I are in the process of buying a new place and I've been trying to figure out what I want for working facilities. Wanting some feedback on what you think of this design. I wouldn't call it a bud box, but kind of would be working on the same principles, with the option of being...
