my fourth calf was born Saturday morning. A bull calf, and the first calf born to one of my three cows, a four year old, one of the first two I started with. Hopefully I have two more to go. My question is about ear tags. This is the first season I have tagged my calves, just a numbered ID tag...

    Forsaking income for contentment

If you start early in your working career, the US stock market is one of the safest and most profitable investments you can make. In its history there has never been a ten year period when it didn’t increase in value. When I was 22 years old, I picked up a friends copy of “Money” magazine and...

    Need working facility

I took three calves to the market last month. First time I had ever done it myself. I had the calves in a one acre lot. The day before I was going to haul them, I parked my 16 ft stock trailer in there, put a wash tub in the trailer with some grain and left the door open. The three calves walked...

Third calf born this morning, this is the last of the heifer mommas. Wondering if the three cows were bred later because they had nursing four months old calves when the bull was introduced last summer?

Second calf came this morning. Another heifer calf from one of the first to calf heifers. I am lucky with another new momma. she had her licked dry and up nursing within in 30 mins.

The fun with heifers calving continues.

Checked them at 8am, and the calf was up nursing. Really glad I ear tagged her yesterday, when I checked them again this evening she was running around like a little deer. Never would’ve caught her😀 No new calves from the other five yet.

The fun with heifers calving continues.

I am pretty new to this game and have been watching this thread with interest. Never new about a pregnant cow "adopting" another's calf. My situation. I have 3 cows and 3 heifers due to calve this month. I moved them to a 10 acre pasture close to the house two weeks ago. I check them twice a...

First calf came today. Her momma was from my first calf crop (2 total) born early spring of 22. So this is her first calf, she did well.

one benefit of having only a few cows. They are basically grass feed, but even with good summer grass, I give them a little grain 2X a week. I keep a couple feed troughs in the pasture, that moves when the cows move. I drive the grain out to them in the Polaris side by side. I stay with them...

Yes, I was pretty pleased with that. Worried all day yesterday about how I would get them in the trailer by myself, I walked in with a bucket of grain and all three just followed me in👍🏻

I want to thank everyone who took the time to reply and offer advice, I truly appreciate it. I am going to be checking Craig’s list for a used Priefert SO-4. If that doesn’t work out will probably just get a new head gate to mount at the end of the alleyway ( that I have not built yet)
