    Transitioning to grass-fed

I never meant to imply that we'd be care-free just because we purchased polled cattle. You're correct, and i'll chalk it up to not being clear in my post. My kids are 6 and 8 years-old. Not a doubt in my mind how much damage one of these animals could cause, intentionally or not. I wasn't...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

Thank you Stickney. I don't mind the snarkiness, kind of expected it to a degree asking about grass-fed/finished. But there's beens some good suggestions and advice too. We're going the alfalfa route along with our summer bahia. It's our first time so we'll see how it goes (and tastes)!

    Transitioning to grass-fed

I'll patiently wait for you to find where I said I don't have to worry about my kids since the cattle we bought are polled... And if you don't enjoy grass-fed cattle, don't eat it. Or eat it with hamburger helper or dress it up for tacos or whatever you want to do to mask the flavor. But is...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

J+ that's a good question, I really do not know. I suppose it's the difference between the cattle grazing freely and ingesting a smaller ratio of grass vs seed when they're on pasture, as opposed to being supplemented with 10-15lbs of pure grain? I imagine if they eat pasture grass that's gone...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

Puzzled, we got the same advice when we were looking and ended up going that route. Purchased a homo polled cow with a 3mo bull calf that we'll trade for a finished steer once he's weaned. Hoping to add another homo polled cow to the mix soon and try to get into a breeding cycle. In a perfect...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

Grass-fed, grass-finished is what I should've typed. That is the plan. The idea seems to be pretty off-putting to some people, not sure why? The argument can go both ways. Corn IS a grass, but what part is fed to cattle? Are kernels considered grass? Same with wheat, barley, etc..? Once...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

In the words of Ron Swanson "Fishing is for sport only. Fish meat is practically a vegetable." :) I do appreciate all the tips and advice, thank you all!

    Transitioning to grass-fed

Feels like I'm opening a can of worms, maybe this is the wrong place to ask about grass-fed beef. But God created plenty of things that cattle didn't eat until it was fed to them, including corn, grain, molasses, etc. I realize we're not going the traditional route but cattle were designed to...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

Thank you for the responses. We want grass-fed for the health benefits, and to eat the beef as God created it. We currently eat and enjoy grass-fed beef, just have never raised our own. To each his own but we're at least going to give the grass-fed route a try. We're not trying to create a...

    Transitioning to grass-fed

Apologies in advance if this is a repeated topic, but I'm new to the site. My wife and I are first-time cattle owners as of a few weeks ago. We bought a Dexter cow/bull calf pair plus a 2yo Dexter steer. The prior owner had them primarily on pasture in Central FL and supplemented with some...

New to FL, new to livestock

Good morning. Website suggested an introductory post so here goes... I'm an early 40's married father of two living in Central FL. I'm a cop, my wife is a nurse practitioner. We're originally from the suburbs of northern California but moved to central FL in 2018. We moved pre-Covid but the...
