    Big Momma Cows

You are going on the assumption that an animal eats so much per pound of body weight. That is not correct. Yes, there is a definite correlation to weight and how much maintenance it takes, but it is not equal across the board. An 1800# cow does not eat twice as much as a 900# cow. This has...

    The off grid/minimalist/homesteading lifestyle

What did your grandparents do? Great grandparents? People have been getting old and decrepit for a long time and they survived. My great great grandparents lived a long time making one trip to town by mule once a month to buy feed, a sack of flower and some corn mash to make liquor. My grandpa...

    Big Momma Cows

Hypothetical based on all grass and hay commercial cow/calf in a perfect world- So based on Friday’s siler city market report I can sell 730# steers for $901 a head and I can sell 475# steers for $714 a head. Let’s say that cow that weaned a 730# calf was a 1800#er. And the cow weaning the 475#...

    $162,000 stay at home

Tax is theft. One could argue that it’s necessary in some cases like national defense and foreign policy. But never did I sign on the doted line to hand over my earned paycheck to a third party to do with it how they see fit. My point was just that taxation is not fair no matter how you look at...

Nothing about taxation is “fair” if you think about it.

    DIY or hire a pro?

I think I can live with that price. This is the first year for AI. Definitely paying someone the first go round. Sounds like it’s worth paying for it to save the hassle.

    DIY or hire a pro?

Thanks for the response, that’s not too bad. I want to stick them once (registered Herf) and then turn out the bull (commercial angus) and then see who stuck and who didn’t. Do it this way the first year or two until I get more familiar. I’m no expert on heat detection so I definitely need help...

    DIY or hire a pro?

What’s more cost effective when it comes to A.I.? How much initial investment on classes and equipment for diy? How much per head would it cost to hire someone to AI your cows. This is for 20-30 head. Personal experiences welcomed, thanks!

How much lower can the cull cow market go?

That was an awesome thread, one of the best reads I’ve found on here.

Buying short bred cattle... starting out.

Thanks Sky and CB, good info I’ll have to take a look at that book. Another reason is because I’m on an island surrounded by a sea of black hides. Not that it makes a hill of beans difference, but I don’t want to be another jack leg raising black just because black.
