October 10-11, 2001
Throckmorton, Texas

The R.A. Brown Ranch Sale of the Century was an event to behold. As the opening prayer concluded, rain began to fall, dropping one inch on the drought stricken ranch. The crowd of over 400 people in attendance was safe and dry under the sale barn for an excellent sale of superior genetics. In total 195 of the 277 registered buyers purchased cattle taking them to 16 different states and Mexico. The Brown family has always focused on the needs of the commercial cattleman and continually strive to improve their customers profits as their Full Service Genetic Provider. Cattle buyers were on hand during the sale from the Rancher's Renaissance, Future Beef, Etheredge & Caprock, as well as Tascosa & CattleTown Feedlots to try and buy calves from customers using Brown bulls. Ninety-seven percent of the bulls went to commercial producers who are receiving more and more premiums as a result of using Brown Bulls. It was exciting to see A.I. studs and registered breeders also competing to purchase some of their industry leading genetics.

Their female sale was also very exciting. The Brown family re-emphasized to the crowd their long-term commitment to the Angus and Red Angus breeds when they informed them of the 400+ embryo calves on the way to replace the cows sold in the sale.

The bull sale began with two Angus herd sires going to A.I. stud. RAB-GAR Peak, a full brother to Pinnacle, Summit, Paramont, and Everest, sold to Genetic Horizons, Ron Eaton and Roy Bunt, for $6,350. This makes the first time in history that five full brothers have been in A.I. studs and they are considered by many as the most dominant carcass family in the industry today.

Lot 2, RAB Fed Ex 168J (payload x 1489 x 033) a fantastic calving ease sire went to Genetic Horizons, Ron Eaton and Roy Bunt, selling for $8,650. Lot 14, RAB-GAR Basin Max 4156K, (Basin Max x Consistence x Bando) is another bull used in the Browns Carcass Test Program and sold to Manual Gonzales from Mexico, for $5,500.

Brown Vacation H7106, one of the Brown Ranch's Red Angus herd sires also went to A.I. stud selling to Alta Genetics for $9,750. This excellent calving ease sire also has tremendous muscle as he is sired by Beckton Julian B571 and out of a King Rob daughter. Lot 177, Brown Make My Day K6177, (Make My Day x Superman x Heavenly) went to Cedar Hill Farm, (Dan Stickel), Jane Lew, W.V. for $6,500. Lot 179, Brown Make My Day K7224, (Make My Day x Julian B571 x Robin Hood) sold to Jeff Diles, Vista Red Angus, Utopia, Texas, for $6,000.

The SimAngus bulls were the hottest item of the day for commercial producers who are seeking to hit the value based marketing bulls-eye with the ideal blend of English x Continental genetics. Lot 299, RAB Red Light 011, (Red Light x Sleep Easy x Pierre) was a really stout solid black bull selling to Kreusler & Son of New Braunfels, Texas, for $4,300. Lot 304, RAB 600U 013, (Leachman 600U x Max x Traveler 6T6) was purchased by Bushman Ranch in Anderson, Texas, for $3,500. The SimAngus were the highest averaging breed group of the entire sale.

The growth and carcass emphasis the Brown family has built into their powerful solid red and black Simmental bulls was very impressive to the crowd. Many repeat customers were excited to be back after Future Beef paid top prices this year for more than 3,000 calves sired by Brown Ranch Simmental bulls. The high selling Simmental bull was a really impressive, solid black bull, lot 335, RAB Lucky Buck K516, (Lucky Buck x ER Max), who sold to Tom Risinger, Crockett, Texas, for $3,500. Tom and Dianne Risinger have been to all 27 bulls sales the Brown's have had. Solid red bulls were also a hot time with Lot 340, RAB Stabilizer K2817, (Hooks Stabilizer x RAB Stretch Power) sold to Triangle Ranches of Texas, Paducah, Texas, for $3,500. Their manager, Matt Swan, was also one of the volume buyers and now owns over 100 of the Brown's best SM bulls. Dub Waldrip and Jim McAdams of Spade Ranch bought lot RAB Red Light K2829, (Red Light x Red Brother), Colorado City, Texas, for $3,100.

Hotlander bulls were a great buy with Lot 423, (Heaven Sent x Double Time Son), selling to Wayland Kilgore, Telferner, Texas, for $2,900 and Lot 475 (Heaven Sent x Formidabull) selling to Broseco Ranch, Decatur, Texas, for $2,700. Broseco Ranch and Ian Chapman were the volume buyers for Hotlander Bulls.

T.L. Griffin who ranches in both Channing and Borden County, was the volume bull buyer taking home a total of 22 bulls.

Supper on Tuesday night included a free seminar by Bud Williams, and a Prime Rib dinner was sponsored by Intervet.

FEMALE SALE

The female sale was exciting from start to finish. The Brown's dispersed all of their Angus and Red Angus females that were three years and older. They are staying in these breeds and stronger than ever with the large volume of embryo calves they have on the way. Their purpose in selling the cow herd was to allow registered breeders the opportunity to share in the success of their superior genetics. Mark Gardiner said, Commercial cattlemen have always regarded the RA Brown Ranch as one of the top bull producers in the industry. And now, as a result of this cow sale, Angus and Red Angus seed stock breeders also know how genetically superior the Brown's cattle are.

Topping the sale was a $40,000 Precision x EXT x Scotch Cap daughter, Lot 503, consigned by Gardiner Angus Ranch, who sold to Jud Baldridge, North Platte, Neb. Another Precision x Scotch Cap cow, Lot 514, consigned by Don Meador of Dream Catcher Genetics sold for $20,000 to Southern Cattle Company, Campbelton, Fla. Lot 501 was the dam of the highest selling bull ever at RAB, RAB-GAR Load Up, who is now at ABS. She sold for $12,000 to Ron Kendall of Big K Ranch, Eagle Farm and Ranch and Matt Dahl.

Red Angus females sold very strong throughout the day and taking out the three high selling Angus cows, the red Angus out sold the black females. Two Beckton Julian B571 daughters were the high selling red females both going to Dan and Alicia Stickel, Cedar Hill Farm, in Jane Lew, W.V., for $5,250 and $4,800. A Golden Boy x King Rob daughter sold to Anne Dun of Dale, Texas, for $4,750.

Simmental females were also really strong with three black females toping the day. Lot 825 was a powerful Preferred Stock daughter who sold to John Howard, Pigeon Mountain Simmentals in Lafayette, Ga. for $7,750. Wayne Gabbert of Vernon, Texas, let people know he is serious about the Simmental business buying two Lucky Buck daughters for $3,750 and $1,800.

The Wednesday evening steak dinner was sponsored by Dectomax and Pfizer Animal Health. Dan and Alicia Stickel from Jane Lew, W.V. were the volume buyers, taking home 28 head of superior Red Angus bulls and females to start their Red Angus herd. Dan and Alicia had dated for seven years and decided to get married on their trip to Texas. So after the sale they asked if the Browns knew of someone who could marry them. Better than that, they rearranged the sale barn while the preacher was on the way and had a cowboy wedding right in front of the sale ring. It was a beautiful ceremony and a great way to wrap up a two day event that earned its name as the Sale of the Century.
