Well we have seen evidence of how much Oscar gets done in a day.
We use long cords at B's brandings with his generator. At my place there is a long cord coming out of the barn. It is dead silent. Most of the neighbors here use an old wheel rim with a fire built in it. Quiet but smokey...
I am going to till the garden sometime this week and start getting things planted. We had snow 2 weeks ago and a heavy frost one week ago. I think I am safe now. We have planted as late as June 15.
Me too but odd shaped fields and the cost to install and operate, I come to my senses. Our water is real cheap and gravity works for free. So I change tarps most every morning. The big irrigation districts charge as much as $75 a acre for water and the ditch rider tells you when and how much...
It is B's deal. I believe he has tried just about everything under the sun. He calves out over a thousand every year so he has a bit of experience. The Calvary has tetanus and I know that is a concern of his. He bands all the bull calves at that same time.
These two are waiting for me at the back door. They want their breakfast. If they would spend their night hunting and eating mice they wouldn't be so hungry every morning. I have to feed them before I turn the dogs loose. Otherwise the race is on.
This morning I told the wife I was going out to water my plants. I think I have a little different definition than most people when it comes to watering the plants. But grass is a plant I have have about 67 acres to water on a regular basis. My daily morning chore that started a couple weeks...
At my place and B's the calves get a Calvary 9 and a Multimin in the first day or 2. At brandings (I think I went to 8 of them this year) everyone seems to use the same thing. Ultra bac 8, Bovashield gold, and Nasalgen PHK.
Buying one and done cows I always end up with a late calf or 2. Last year hay was real high so I started buying cows later. Thus I had more late calves. Cows get shipped in mid August so a May calf is only 3 months old. Had a dozen of them last year. Kept them and fed them. I am certain...
I knew a guy who was running about 300 pairs out east of Seattle. Microsoft millionaires bought up old 80 acre dairies. Built a McMansion on it. They gave him free grazing. They wanted to keep the grass down and like to look at the cows. He made out like a fat rat. Free feed for his cows...
B's scale is big enough to weigh 12 or more at a time. So just weighing them as we push them in wouldn't take much time. Sorting by owner, sex, and size would give a person more information but would take more time. Hmmm I am going to be talking to B about this idea.
These calves are pretty...
This did get me thinking. When we ship the one and done cows that is done at B's corral. He has a fairly good size scale. After we ship the cows we haul the calves to my place. We could weigh the calves. And then we will get the weight when they sell. Calves get weaned in mid August and...
The prices I quoted are for range land. These are hundreds if not thousands of acres. Those bring their own set of challenges. There are none of the flat irrigated pastures here locally. I have no idea what the ones like that leased over in the Baker Valley are priced at.
I have been told that you buy rat tail cows at a discount and breed them to a Red Angus which will eliminate the rat tail in their calves. Never tried it myself but the person who told me should know.
Here it is $25 per cow per month. $20 is the low ball figure and some are at $30. The holding capacity can vary greatly. There is lot of steep low production range land that is 5 to 10 acres per cow per month. And there is some flat irrigated pasture that is less than 3 acres for a cow for...
A couple neighbors and I have a saying. Clean cars are over rated. Our road is either mud or dust. Not enough mud to get stuck but sure enough to make the pickup a mess every time I go out the driveway. There are some roads around here that you just don't go on if it has rained.
I should...
Here everyone with cattle do it to make their living. Everyone uses real good bulls. So bulls being bulls if one gets into your pasture it is not a big concern with getting dink calves from someones dink bull. And the range land pastures are big enough and rugged enough that you might not...
