    Braunvieh babies!

Thought I would share a few pics of new calves born in the last few days....and a fullblood Braunvieh cow. She calved 2 days after pic was taken.

    water bag not breaking

Do you see this as a sign of a calving issue? We had a cow showing what looked like afterbirth after a while trying to calve. Head was back, calf dead, cow saved. Heard that afterbirth showing is a sign of head back. Last night had cow with waterbag out, never broke, never saw feet. After...

    Leasing bulls

Was wondering what you charge if you are leasing out bulls. Also, do you have a contract or written conditions on the bull being returned in the same condition as he left? What about if the bull dies or is injured while being leased out? I am considering leasing out some good yearling bulls but...

    update on banded bull

Thanks everyone for your replies! We gave the bull two rounds of twin pen and the swelling has gone down completely and he is feeling much better. We also cut off the scrotum, it was too dried up already to drain, but boy did it stink. Not a pleasant experience..... Thanks again for the help.

    sheep head for clipping heads

I have been using a flat head for ages to clip heads, but lately I am finding my clippers get hair under the blades and won't cut, dull easily, etc etc. I have heard many people say they use a sheep head for heads. If so, does it work better than the flat head? What one would your recommend for...

    swelling on banded bull

We banded several bulls about 8 days ago, they are weighing about 700. One bull today we noticed has some swelling above the band, looks like fluid build up. Not huge, but noticeable if you look. He is eating fine and seems otherwise healthy, but you can tell it is uncomfortable to him. Do you...

    clipper blades

Does anyone else have trouble with blades not cutting when clipping heads? If I use my big clipmasters, they work great unless the blades are getting dull. But if I use a smaller clipper like Andis 2 speed, with a coarse or medium blade, it seems to clog on the hair (esp. when clipping head the...

    Do you like this bull?

This is our registered purebred Braunvieh bull, at 2 1/2 years old. Was wondering what you think of him. Appreciate any comments. Thanks!

    Show day prep

I would love to hear what you all do on the day of the show and how early you start. We are quite new to showing and fitting. Seem to have the clipping down pretty good but need some help prepping the calves on show day. If you could please share what you put in the hair, the order, etc, I would...

    roached back

Are you familiar with this and is it due to genetics or injury? We haven't had it before but this year have two calves with it and one is pretty severe. I am pretty sure they weren't like that as babies either. I will post a picture to show what I mean. Any ideas? Thanks

Need a good semen collection facility

Am looking for a semen collection facility in Kansas, Nebraska or Eastern Colorado. Also, do you typically have to leave your bulls to get them collected or can you collect them and leave in one day? At my current facility, I have had to leave my bulls there and it takes several collections...

anyone fighting enterotoxemia or clos. perf. C&D?

We call it overeating disease, and we lose at least one calf every spring to it, generally a large calf doing very well and getting lots of milk. How do you deal with it? Do you give baby calves anything at birth? We have tried both 7 way and the C&D antitoxin at birth but still seem to lose them.

    daily hair routine

Was looking for some ideas on what to put on hair daily. A friend uses revive in evening, combs and blows in, leaves it. Another breeder uses a combination of rag oil, clean sheen and zoom bloom and sprays it in then blows dry, does not wash every day. Our cattle are outside this time of year...

    bull breeding shares

Has anyone had experience with selling either breeding shares on a bull or selling a percentage of a bull? Was wondering on shares, with selling only X number of straws if the seller or buyer pays the costs to collect the straws. We have someone wanting to purchase 10% of a bull for unlimited...

To what age do your herd bulls generally last?

We raise Braunvieh and our original and oldest herd sire has finally started going down hill and will be sold this fall. He will be 10 years old in March and bred all the cows this summer. He still has good feet and legs just getting really thin and slowing down. In our breed I know of bulls...

    email scam or legit?

Was wondering if anyone has gotten an email from [email protected] They contacted our ranch about purchasing several units of semen and claim to be sending $$$ (over the amount charged) . No name listed, has a Washington phone #. Anyone know? I am leaning towards it being a scam...

    clipping question

We are new to showing and clipping and have had some practice on cattle shown in the winter when the hair was much thicker and longer. Now, we have some cattle we have been working with for a show in a few weeks and the older cattle (18 months) have very little hair to work with. They have been...

    calf trapped in water tank

We had a 600 pound heifer calf that got into our huge fiberglass stock tank in the pasture. We think she was in there at least 24 hours before we discovered her, she was still alive and standing on her front legs but her back legs were sprawled out like a frog behind her. The tank is not really...

    setting feet in the showring

Is the current standard to set the back legs so that the leg closest to the judge is further back? If so, what do you do if your cattle will do this well on one side but not the other? Or, does this matter? If all else fails, should you just square them up on the back? Thanks again!
