Halter breaking a 7 month old heifer

Thanks L. Weir. I tied her today for about 10-15 min. She tried to fight it a bit but did not flip over. A few more weeks and we may get somewhere....lol. She really did not want to be messed with....just worried about the rope around her face. Calmed her with grain and took it off when she was...

Halter breaking a 7 month old heifer

I have not got a chance to talk with you in a while Kenny. How are they getting along? Did they find a place yet. Slim pickn's around here with housing. Gas drillers have taken over everything. Kelly does not need to worry about me. I'll be fine. The damn warm winter, and my stupidity has done a...

Halter breaking a 7 month old heifer

Thanks for all of the replies. I had the halter on her again today but I did not take her out of the pen. I really did not work her much at all. I'm gonna try to tie her tomorrow and see what happens.

Halter breaking a 7 month old heifer

I had a 7 month old Gert heifer calf get sick on me a few weeks ago. After a little TLC and a few vet visits we got her on her way to recovery. She is still a little weak but very use to us working with her. To make a long story short the kids and I have taken and extra special liking to her. I...

wood burning box outside of house

My experience is that it does not matter.....green or dry they burn up the wood. I have an easier time keeping the fire burning nice and hot with dry wood, not necessarily seasoned. If its too green it does not burn well.

    heifers and first time owners

Being a heifer, do keep an eye on her but don't try to get real involved unless she seems to be having problems. You will be amazed at what they can do on their own. More times than not "we" make the process difficult for the cow. Let her do her thing and she will be alright. You can actually...

wood burning box outside of house

I have a central boiler. It works well, but sure does eat the wood. There is a low voltage pump that circulates water to your house. The feed and return lines are insulated and burried in the gorund. The hot water is fed into your house and can be used for heat in various ways. I have a heat...

How far have you shipped a bull for natural service sire?

They say that a horned hereford will give you bigger calves at weaning. I really do not know for sure since I have never used a horned hereford.

I was needing to do my first haul to the sale barn. Went out and found a good deal on a used stock trailer. Brought it home, went over it and everything seemed to be in good working order. The next Monday was big sale day.....oh man...yippie. I got the truck and trailer set up.....set up my...

Is it crazy to use this bull?

Ohio- I would not think twice about selling him as a bull for two reasons: 1.) the guy knows what you are selling him. From what I gather you are not selling him as prime realistate. 2.) He really will not be out anything. He can use him and if not happy with the results he can haul him to the...

Are there any pros to buying feeders?

Shaz- if you do not mind me asking, when do you buy and what weights do you buy?

"The World of Small, Square Balers" Thread

Thanks Larry. I did not figure they would come cheap (well at least cost wise). Knowing that they are made cheap, I'll pass and stick with round bales. I was thinking about getting one of them there bale wagons but I'm not on flat ground like Ohio is. Not sure how one of them things would work...

Are there any pros to buying feeders?

Thanks everybody. I guess that with any aspect of the beef business, you need to be ready to lose sometimes, but probably more so with stockers. My only concern is what weights to run????? Biggest problem here in the North East is fall calves are few and far between. Buying calves in the spring...

Are there any pros to buying feeders?

Kenny, don't tell my wife about that crazy idea of a second job. She may like that idea. I have so much to do on this farm, its kind of like my 2nd, 3rd and fourth job. I'm seriously thinking about doing it. Get rid of all of my mommas and just buy feeder steers. I've not been doing this long...

Are there any pros to buying feeders?

Today I was just tossing around the idea of running only feeder steers. My idea is to buy feeder steers in the spring and sell them in the fall, thus eliminating the need to put up hay. Understanding that there is a bit more market risk involved, I'm just wondering if anyone else has gone this...

    2012 NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL CLASSIFICATION SURVEY

I got my USDA survey the other day and completed it on line......because I thought that "it is required by law." Why does the USDA need any of the information on the survey? I get kind of paranoid with it especially when they want details on what your expenses were for the year.....hmmmmm. Could...
