    Need advice

Purina makes a complete calf starter feed, Precon, in a blue and white bag. It’s a complete feed, so it contains so it contains some roughage. It’s pricey, but a lot less trouble than battling the diarrhea caused by regular feeds. I start my weaned calves on this, then transition to a more...

    Hay Equipment question

Well I’ve had the 3 blade Vicon, which is now the Kubota. It’s a good cutter that lasted many years an cut good. When I replaced it I researched, asked commercial cutters. Pretty much everyone said ther two best are Kuhn and Krone. My dealer happens to sell both and they were about the same...

Tips Clearing a Plugged Round Baler?

My baler has a way to release the tension on the belts. Lift the gate insert pin and let the gate down some and all the belts go loose. It makes it WAY easier to get the hay off the rollers when you don’t have to fight the belts.

    Found cow dead

My first suspicion this time of year when a healthy cow fall dead is anaplasmosis. They can go from appearing normal to dead real quick. Walk through your cows and look Closely for any signs of being off.

    Trailer decals

A guy once told me, if you have to have your name on your rig for people to know who you are, you’re not well known. He is a multiple world champion. His truck and trailer are both blank.

    Finding some bulls

A guy I respect a lot once told me, there is as much difference inside a breed, than there is in different breeds. I say that to mean LBW bulls can be had in most breeds to fit your operation. Just do your research, and deal with a breeder you trust.

    Getting the job done

The bull is mighty impressive. A bull that nice on a cellphone picture has to be very impressive in person. I’ve tried it myself, it’s hard to take a bull picture that does them justice. BTW cotton seed $285 ton here in MS.

    SAV or not to SAV

Well I may be an oddity, as I’ve still been using SAV Brilliance. Calves come here with a “look at me” look to them, even from so so cows. If I fault them, it’s that the disposition of the mother is not improved. Not that they are bad, but usually about the same temperament as the cow.

    Technique question

And by the way, I do know how to get 100% conception rate, ..... just put the wrong straw in. Works every time. I know cause I’m expecting a GAR Precision 1680 any day now. A straw I had kept to practice with on commercial cows, got put in my registered cow. Oh well. :D

    Technique question

I feel your pain, the simple process of working a rod through a cervix can be very frustrating. It surely is a developed skill, as I have had others go right behind me and make it look so simple it’s embarrassing. One tip a guy gave me was to give a bucket of feed to the cow while in the chute...

Ebenezer, does Three Trees still sale bulls? I’ve bought from them before, but they quit having sales, and website hasn’t been updated in quite some time. AAA has them as still registering cattle though.

    AI success rate?

How are you guys measuring success rates? I use Patches and natural heat. I was telling my semen agent that I was proud of the fact that when i'm able to observe standing heat, breed twelve hours later, and feel confident in placement, i'm close to 70%. But.... I'm not very experienced, so...
