Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

I just really don't understand how selling corriente crossed calves would be unscrupulous. If you buy a head cow at the same sale you take the same exact chance. You're buying without knowing any history or if they have had health issues. If I get burnt on a cow trade then that's on me. It's my...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

One of the very few things I have done right in my 18 years owning cattle was bought a group of longhorns. Calved them out, then sold them and the weaned calves that fall. They'll make money. I think I actually gave $400 a piece for the heavy breds and $600 for several cow calf pairs.

    Lime Question

Everyone rents it from the local ag office. It will hold around 8 ton or so. Yeah it’s definitely not ideal but we don’t have many options around here.

    Lime Question

We have to spread with a pull behind spreader around here. No lime trucks anywhere close to the best of my knowledge.

    Lime Question

Yeah my goal is to get the 0-0-60 spread within a few weeks and then bush hog the field. Would that be best practice or should I bush hog then apply?

    Lime Question

This is the results of the farm with heavy sedge coverage. I just bought the property back in the spring and didnt cut the fall hay. My plan is to bush hog it all and apply all the recommended fertilizer.

    Lime Question

I don’t know I have a 18 acre field with a ph of 7.9 and its covered in broom sedge. It ended up being very low in phosphorus. Then I have fields with a ph of 5.2 that don’t have much sedge. This is all new territory to me so I’m trying my best not to waste a bunch of time and money.

    Lime Question

I can find the test results for all quarry's in Kentucky on the division of regulatory services. But the quarry that's closest to me is just over in Tennessee and I cant find find any test results for the Tn quarry's. Is that something I could call the quarry and ask about or would they have...

    Lime Question

Does it matter what quarry the lime comes from? I live 15 miles from a quarry but people have told me it’s best to get it hauled from a different quarry over an hour away. Lime is $13 a ton both places but the haul bill is obviously going to be way different. I have a great deal of land I’m...

Where do I go From Here?

Well in appreciation for all the good advice given to me on here I figured it would be good to give everyone a years update and follow up from my original post. After implementing several changes with our vaccinations and lowering our stocking rate we have had our most successful calf crop that...

    Bush Hogging a Hay Field?

Is it more beneficial to bush hog and chop as fine as you can or disc mow it, fluff then leave it?

    Bush Hogging a Hay Field?

Is there any benefit to resting a hay field and bush hogging it to rot on the ground? I bought a 18 acre piece of property and just now sent in my soil samples but I'm not sure what to do with the standing hay in the field. Its decent hay at best with a good bit of broom sedge right now. So is...

    Improving Reclaimed Areas

Technically since I am the owner I can do whatever I want with the property now. The coal company has to come back in 2 years to fix some big cuts and drains they had to leave so I hate to get on their bad side because I don't have any power over the mineral or reclaim contract. I thought about...

    Improving Reclaimed Areas

I own it now. The previous owner had it stripped and wanted to sell after he sold the coal. I got it at a VERY good price and it's just a half mile down the road connecting to a property we already lease. I had some of my own property stripped back 7-8 years ago and it's been a very slow process...

    Improving Reclaimed Areas

I won’t be able to until at least next year. The coal company has to have their reclaim surveyed and it has to have so much stem count to pass for their bond to be released. We do bale graze and feed hay on another section we have that was reclaimed but it’s been a slower less fruitful process...

    Improving Reclaimed Areas

I just bought 33 acres of newly reclaimed coal mines. This has been surface mined and all put back in to pasture ground. The ground consists of mostly slate rock and poor barren soil. It has been hydro seeded and starting to have a decent stand of fescue. What are some ways I can start to build...

Where do I go From Here?

I don’t want to come off as someone that turns my cattle out and takes zero care of my animals. I would put my cattle up against anybodies around here local. They’re in top shape and anybody would be glad to have them on their farm. We keep mineral available at all times 365 days a year. We just...
