Some thoughts on Certified Angus Beef

I'm late, but wanted to add my thoughts. I typed a lot and decided F it all. So... None of it matters. Black hide, CAB, etc, we're all being told what our used car is worth by others. If I let people tell me what they'd pay in my landscaping business... CAB is nothing more than an attempt at...

    JD 640 LOADER

I have a 6300 with the 640 loader. It is by far the most frustrating attachment system I have ever used. It's also hard to find attachments that uses that style. Thankfully I only switch between a bucket and bale spear, so I have just dealt with it. If and when I do change it I will change it...

What kind of bone is this?

It looks like a skull from a cat to me, but I couldn't say for sure by looking at th ephotos.

    How’s your grass?

The storms missed us Saturday. Pastures are not looking too good so I'll be sending a load of steers down the road and might send the lambs early as well. I still have soybeans to plant, but it's too dry. So the fields (already sprayed and fertilized) sit empty. It's shaping up to be "One of...

    How’s your grass?

Yes, moist hay wrapped in plastic. It ferments and makes good feed for the cattle. I've stored bales outside and it does ok. If you can put them on a stone pad instead of dirt the bottoms keep better. Still lose the outside of the bale which does add up. That's why I started wrapping the bales...

    How’s your grass?

I store the dry hay inside the barn. I also wrap baleage when the barn is full. Thankfully I made enough hay to feed the animals for a winter. With more cuttings of alfalfa and hopefully a second grass cutting, I should have some to sell also.

    How’s your grass?

Baled the Hay today. I guessed maybe a 25% less yield than average. It ended up being 45% less yield than average this year. Same field, same fertilizer, same time of year within a week give or take. Soil test looks good, ph 6.8. We have been dry, but not dry enough for -45% hay yield. Maybe...

    How’s your grass?

Mowed about 40 acres of grass hay today. Yield is going to be less than last year, but the quality should be good.

    New disc mower

We have a local Vermeer dealer near by so there is a good bit of Vermeer equipment being used. People seem to really like their mowers. I almost bought a Vermeer 3pt mower. When the dealership orders one for a customer they get 2 as they come packaged 2 to a crate. They wanted to sell it so the...

    Black buzzards struck again.

Since part of this seems directed at me... My conversation with the Game Officer was years ago. Long before a Permit was available, which is a very recent thing.

    How’s your grass?

Things seem to have turned a corner here. We got almost 4 inches of rain a couple weeks ago and some sun and heat. The grass has shot up, added bulk, and headed out. I cut the alfalfa this week. Had trouble drying the alfalfa though so it was chopped for silage. More rain tonight and then next...

Animals or cattle chewing through solar fencer wires

Gotta put the charger where the cattle can't get to it. Outside the perimeter fence, or if rotating, other side of the poly wire.

    Black buzzards struck again.

That's a tough pill to swallow. We've had trouble with them from time to time. We've lost lambs to them and many many chickens, but no calves yet. A few years back we lost some lambs as they were being born. The black buzzards would peck out the eyeballs of the lamb as it was being born. I would...

    Bull Critique

Looks pretty good to me. Nitpick this or that, but overall package at his age, I'd use him. With that said my entire income and farm isn't on the line if he doesn't perform or produce great offspring.

    How’s your grass?

We've had a week of rain and cold temps. Thankful for the rain, but too cold for the grass to use it. The grass does look better, but not where it shoudl be. 12" orchard grass and smooth brome is heading out, but not thick at all. Cows are eating between the seed heads.

    BALER TRACTOR

2950 for sure. The older 2000 and 4000 series from JD was by far some of the best tractors ever made.

    Best way to wrap beef?

I like vacuum sealed or freezer paper without any additional plastic.

How do you call the cows

I bang on a bucket and yell "c'mon cow" to bring them in from a distance. If I'm pulling up poly to move them to another strip a simple low key "c'mon cow" works just fine.

    What are you eating today?

Today is cool and rainy. We need the rain so I am thankful. I made my chicken potpie. It's a slippery, one pot, potpie with egg dough.

    First Calf Heifer

If the heifer is 24 months and the birth was unassisted then I might keep heifer calves to increase herd size or replace. I work under the idea that I can buy a better bull tan I can breed. So bulls would be steer'd heifer or old cow.
