Calf ears eaten off a bit ....

Thanks, Hillsdown! Wow! WOW. When his mom left him, it had snowed about 10 inches, (that was 5 weeks ago) and he was caught in briers. We got him out, (he hadn't been out that long, about an hour) but I know that is long enough to have frosted ears. When we got him up to the barn, I...

Calf ears eaten off a bit ....

First off, why oh why do I have the oddest things that happen on this board? I guess I have been through all the rest, so I will just lead the pack in "oddities". Bottle fed calf in barn (Mom abandoned it during blizzard) and has done REALLY well. No problems at all, very big calf, and is also...

    Blizzard calving

thanks angie for your reply, I am in 100% agreement about winter calving. Next year, we are putting calving off until late March. Actually, it wouldn't of been bad, but the 62 inches of snow is a 100 year occurrence, thankfully. Anyway, was just wondering if anyone had ever seen this happen...

    Blizzard calving

Hello, just wanted to check to see how others are making out calving (I live in Maryland) this season with the huge amounts of snow. We have all of our cows in our new loafing barn, but were unable to (just started today) to make bigger paths out into the field. (In Maryland rec'd 62 inches of...

Never had Pneumonia 50 years but do now

Hey that is a good point~not two weeks prior we had the "butcher" up with his helper to take five away. "They" were standing around shooting the breeze....boots you know the routine. Cows were stressed, loss of a few...probably translated to younger calves being "stressed" too. Thanks for your...

    Odd question, great bull calf

I have never as a Angus farmer sold any of my bull calves. I have this great looking bull calf that I would like to sell as a bull. (he is 8 months old about 300 lbs.) Alas, his father, is registered but not the dam. He is good spirited but a mix of holestein and angus. His is not leggy~but...

Never had Pneumonia 50 years but do now

Call me slow on the verdict~ but all the calves survived and have rebounded beautifully. They are pure bred angus, one bull calf, two heifer calves. My vet is about 85 years old......has been our vet for more the 50 years (a long, long, time) and we worked with these beautiful creatures...

Never had Pneumonia 50 years but do now

Hey, thanks so much! Vet to come out tomorrow A.M. ~ will strongly suggest and follow through with the BVD test. Since we are an older established farm we haven't had this test, (had no problems such as this) but this is such a good point. Will follow through and report back findings.

Never had Pneumonia 50 years but do now

Evening everyone...... Our farm in Maryland has been in business for 50 plus years, and this is the first time we have 3 cases of pneumonia on three 6-12 month old hand raised calves in the barn. Called vet right away when I suspected things weren't right this morning. Vet came right out, gave...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Hi Needmore! Thanks for you wonderful reply. Now at 4 weeks, (knock on wood) she has not had a seizure, (that I have witnessed). I have been checking in on her about every 4 hours, and don't let her go without food. That is a good idea you had. I have given her calf grain, (a good quality one...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Hi all :D Things are great with the calf! I am surprised as you all. No evidence so far of seizures/convulsions. Just thought I would let you all know. She is eating well, her grain, bottles, water etc, salt lick.......... Running and kicking up heals. So far so good. 4 weeks old...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Victoria...I appreciate your thoughtful, insightful information. I did read the abstract in Merek Vet~and see that infact she does bear some of those unfortunate symptoms. Today was the first full day on Phenobarbital 1 gram. She has had two doses. This morning, no seizure, no falling down...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Thank you so much again, I will make sure she has her water. The injectable fly deterant certainly seems like another really beyond worthy investment too. Boy, I am amazed at all the stories on here. I guess our calf mortality rate isn't so bad, after all. We do have pink eye problems~just...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Hey, CPL~ thanks! She is a big girl now. Probably about 80-90 lbs, hard to tell, when she is limp, or stiff, she feels like our steers at 800 lbs. :D I gave her water, and she readily drank from the bucket on her own. She also discovered the salt lick today. She ate a bit of nice hay too. By...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Thanks so much for your reply, randiliana. I appreciate it. It is strange, same way, go to give bottle, she gets real excited, falls down and starts. I asked vet if we should put her down, but he said she isn't suffering yet, and wants to see what happens over the next few days. Thank you...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Ok, I have just been throwing myself into these threads, and finding out all kinds of information. Let me give you a bit of history, maybe this will help me, the calf, and understanding. This is my fathers farm. He is 89 years old, and has been doing black angus beef farming for about 60...

2 week old calf angus seizures

Good afternoon all! I am new to these boards, but not new to cattle farming. Have a holstein/Angus mix calf, (Mom had blocked udders thus not feeding calf) Have been bottle raising, usual amount of milk replacer (1 qt. x 2 a day) but calf has had at least 5 grand mal seizures. Head goes back...
