Loading Hay in Field w/ Spike or Arm Bed

I have loaded trailers with a spike on the back of a truck. It’s doable with the right setup, but far from ideal. I had a ‘91 F350 4x4 that sat pretty high, and not a spike bed, but a flat bed with a J&I spike sitting on top of it - so the spikes sat pretty high. We had a flatbed trailer , 20’...

    Running boards and grill guards

Ranch Hand or Frontier. I’ve had grill guards and full front end replacements from both and have been happy with them. I had a truck I bought used with Ranch Hand ”running steps” as they call them. Didn’t really like them at first, thought they were too big and hung too low, but they really...

    Circle D stock trailers

I’ve had several bar top trailers -all have been WW brand, and I’ve been pleased with them, too. We keep a more enclosed trailer mostly to show with ( it’s really handy that the running board on the Circle D works great for a low outside tie rail ). Sometimes it is nice to have that more...

    Circle D stock trailers

I’m on my fourth one in the last 20 years or so. I started with a 16’, traded up to a 20’, then to a 24’. I traded the 24’ for an aluminum that I pulled for 3 years and popped off and priced it higher than I gave for it and the guy bought it. I banked almost half of that money and bought...

Doing real work with a 1/2 ton truck?

I used a 2018 F-150 with the 3.5 eco boost and 10 speed automatic as my daily for a little while. No other gas engine in a half ton has the torque of the eco boost, at least not when we bought it. It pulled great - unlike most naturally aspirated gas engines, it makes it‘s torque at lower...

Tread depth and traction on M/T tires

235/85’s and 265/75’s are pretty much the same height. If you don’t mind the difference, you could safely run your current better 235/85’s on the front and new 265/75’s on the back if you’re so inclined. If you’re concerned you can go online and look up the specs of the particular tires you have...

    F-150 Ecoboost

We have an ‘18 that has a little over 20k miles on it. Combined average mileage is right at 21. It’s my wife’s daily driver, and she drives it hard. I’ve pulled several different trailers with it, the heaviest being a 6’8” x 20’ Circle D stock trailer (5k empty) with 4K of cattle in it. It’s...

    International 1486

Second what everyone else has said about being hard shifting and not handy as a loader tractor, but good cheap hp for a field tractor. Our 1086 is very hard to start in even just cool weather, but maybe it’s just this one.

    Trucking Cattle

At the sale barn where I work we have a customer who pulls a 6’8” x 36’ with a Ram 5500. He loads it full and goes. We also have a custom hauler that had a 7’ x 40’ that he pulled with a Ram 3500 - he likes to brag on how much he can haul with it, but I’ve never seen it with more cattle in it...

    Thoughts on UTVs

As others have said, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but our 620 Gator has never let us down. Maintenance is minimal, and in the 4 years we’ve had it, it’s never needed anything else. I’d buy another one in a heartbeat. That said, I’d probably step up to the 825 next time. I’ve...

    Inline Hay Trailers

For us, not needing a tractor to unload is a huge advantage of the dump trailer - but we don’t stack our hay in the barn, either. We stack outside and rarely have to restack hay unloaded from a dump trailer. If your bales are pushed together tight on the trailer, they should come off in a...

    Inline Hay Trailers

Go Bob makes individual dump trailers too, but we don’t see many of those around here. They would definitely be the better deal if you needed it to feed with, but if you’re mostly just moving hay the others will haul more and load and unload faster. Just depends on what you need to do with it.

    Inline Hay Trailers

    This pretty well explains it.

    Inline Hay Trailers

I regularly use a couple of different ones, one is a Red Rhino, not sure what brand the other one is offhand. Both are supposed to be 42’ I believe - they’ll haul 11 four foot bales, but about 6” of the last bale hangs off the end. They still sit firmly enough that they’re not going to come...

    Best tire for livestock trailer?

There are several factors likely in play here, but the single biggest one is probably age. If the tires on my stock trailers make it 3 years, I replace them for sure. Two years max on the ones I pull 200+ miles a week. I might keep the older ones around for spares or use them on something...

Single axle day cab/40’ ground load

I was thinking that Bigfoot had originally asked if we thought he could get 2-3 loads a week (I looked back and it was 3-4), so I meant one could meet that expectation. And could exceed it considerably if you wanted. Doesn’t seem to be much point if you’re just meeting expenses, unless you’re...

Single axle day cab/40’ ground load

You could sure find 2-3 loads a week (or more) for that 40’ ground load around here. You could also stay just as busy you wanted to be with a 32’ gooseneck, but I’d think you’d be able to charge a little more for the ground load. The gooseneck would be a little cheaper to buy, and a little...

    2000 F250

I know a couple of V10 Fords with 300k plus with no major issues. I wouldn’t be scared of it, but it does sound a bit high to me. You didn’t mention what cab or trim level. It’s probably not far off for a Lariat crew cab in nice condition, but if it’s an XL regular cab in average condition it’s...

    Diesel to gas rig?

I’m all about gas powered, regular cab feed trucks. I want the lightest, shortest thing I can get to get around in, and I never know when I might need to get in it in the cold and go immediately for a mile, then turn it off for an hour and get back in and do the same thing again - that’s just...

    Ford's New 7.3 Can Fit In a F-150...........

It seems that what I was thinking was a high idle option, on new Fords at least, is actually a switch that turns the motor off after it has idled a certain length of time. My bad.
