Fetal Programming beef cows. If you don't feed them, don't expect much...

Right. We feed it in our mineral too. We are considering an oiler as well but unsure of resistance build up (even switching the chemical twice or more a year).

Why the fly tubs versus investing in an oiler?

    We can start now.

Nice tight calving window it looks like. Congrats!

Help me understand $EN and MH

We don't believe we can carry huge cattle down here in Texas. We just don't grow the groceries like the folks in NE and MT do. We could run bigger cattle but fewer head. We think the optimum profitability for us is in a 1200lb female that is about 50-52in. Moderate frame.

    Should I cull?

    1. I'd mouth her...10 to 1 she has a broken tooth or two that are hurting. 2. If she is eating that much and not holding weight, could be parasite or disease. 3. We have never had lice that bad but I can't imagine that is the issue. Could be wrong but... 4. Have you changed your...

We can't make the numbers work on it. We don't use them.

How long do you all hold a bull for your herd?

I just was replying on another thread and it got me thinking. How long will you keep a bull in your herd? What makes a bull get culled from your herd? We roughly hold them 4-5 years. They are normally 18-24 months old when we buy them so by the time they are 6-8 years old, they seem to...

    Resource ve Cowboy Up

We can't handle Cowboy Up's lack of milk. We have seen him used heavily to correct herds that chased $B to the detriment of the milk epd.

    Pelvic measurements

What would a typical cost for this service be in your area?

    Pelvic measurements

Do any of you measure the pelvis for your heifer retention program and if so, how involved is it? Do you do it or do you have a vet come and do it? We have never done it but are thinking about it and honestly don't know enough.

what epd's do you pay attention too??

We look at combinations of traits...$W + $EN would be one of them and have a floor we try not to go under. I know they are related by inputs already (like milk) but we like to see what it "costs" us to get the $W numbers. It also really matters on where you sell them. Weaning? Do you retain...

    Second chance or cull?

Jehosofat, what do you think about Lassiter not wanting to use fly, flea or tick remedies nor shoot coyotes or rattlesnakes? I loved the book (in reprint for those looking for it) but they had a bit more guts than me in the way they raised those Beefmasters. I understand the reasoning and we...

    How long a breeding season

I'd be interested in knowing how long everyone targets their breeding season. We are a completely spring calving herd. I'll start it off with we AI the yearling heifers in early April, first calf on the ground cows in late April and our cows in mid May. We leave the bulls in with each lot and...
