Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

I just really don't understand how selling corriente crossed calves would be unscrupulous. If you buy a head cow at the same sale you take the same exact chance. You're buying without knowing any history or if they have had health issues. If I get burnt on a cow trade then that's on me. It's my...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

One of the very few things I have done right in my 18 years owning cattle was bought a group of longhorns. Calved them out, then sold them and the weaned calves that fall. They'll make money. I think I actually gave $400 a piece for the heavy breds and $600 for several cow calf pairs.

Where do I go From Here?

Well in appreciation for all the good advice given to me on here I figured it would be good to give everyone a years update and follow up from my original post. After implementing several changes with our vaccinations and lowering our stocking rate we have had our most successful calf crop that...

Where do I go From Here?

I don’t want to come off as someone that turns my cattle out and takes zero care of my animals. I would put my cattle up against anybodies around here local. They’re in top shape and anybody would be glad to have them on their farm. We keep mineral available at all times 365 days a year. We just...

Where do I go From Here?

I wouldn’t say he’s totally on board. We have roughly 30 head cows a piece. I’m hoping if I can make some slow changes and he can see the success of what I’m doing it will encourage him to jump in with both feet.

Where do I go From Here?

Just wanted to come back and say I’ve read through this entire thread three times now. I contacted my local extension office yesterday and inquired about the cost share program and got the ball rolling on that. They said I have to have a water quality program to qualify so I have to call another...

Where do I go From Here?

What can I expect regarding weaning weights at 7-8 months with proper genetics? Right now we average around 525-550 pounds at sale time. The calves we sell always bring top of the market. They're good top quality calves. With good genetics on both sides should I be selling 650-700 pounders at 8...

Where do I go From Here?

I did read the link you provided. I have heard of the cost share program but always been skeptical and never investigated it any further. How do I get information on how to sign up for that? Local extension office or? Not ignoring advice I just learned and grew up under old timers advice. Most...

Where do I go From Here?

The bull seems like a major part of the operations success. How would I go about finding and choosing a bull that would be good for my conditions? We don't have a lot of good farms around us locally so finding something close would be very unlikely. It doesn't seem like a good idea to go to the...

Where do I go From Here?

Absolutely. This estate sold 107 head though. I went to the barn while they was trucking them in and looked them all over. Education isn't free so I try to learn from my mistakes as well as others very quickly.

Where do I go From Here?

I bought 5 from a stockyard this year. It was an estate sale. Thats the first one’s ive bought from a sale barn in over 12 years. We buy from other farms but mostly raise our own heifers. Honestly thinking back on it most of my issues have came from the charlois angus cross cows. The best cow on...

Where do I go From Here?

Hey @kenny thomas I sent you a pm! Like I said before we buy what we think is good and will make money. That means we dont really have a defined calving season. I would say 70% are spring calvers from march-may but it’s pretty strung out. I was talking to my dad the other day about this...

Where do I go From Here?

I live in the Whitley/Knox county area. Right now we have a black angus and charlois bull. Neither is registered but they both have the characteristics id want in a bull. That being said my knowledge base on bull selection is limited. We don’t have a great deal of loss from calving but it’s...

Where do I go From Here?

We experience a higher than normal loss rate compared to everyone around us. Lose cows as well as calves and we go the extra mile to maintain good heard health. I always felt like the bull was the major factor but after continuous issues I feel like we're not culling or being near selective...

Where do I go From Here?

Hey guys I am new to the site but been running cattle for about 17 years here in Southeastern Ky. I started in cattle when I was 16 yrs old with my dad and it's been a bumpy road. My dad and I we're to ignorant and also somewhat to stubborn to research and educate ourselves as we started out in...
