    Reduced Waste & Cost/Ton with Balage ?

I view it like an insurance policy. A necessary evil. IMO, baleage is expensive and has its own type waste but having the option to make baleage when the weather doesn't cooperate is better than having to rely on someone else for your hay needs.

    Sprigging a new Hay Field

Yep, you done gone and screwed yourself now! What are you gonna do with all the time you're gonna free up by not having plant that cheap low cost winter grazing that you can break even with just 120 days of grazing? And what are you gonna do with all the money you would have spent on...

    Sprigging a new Hay Field

Good luck with it but be careful and don't plant more than you need unless you want to get in the hay business because as I'm sure you know T85 will produce a lot of hay. (this is one of many mistakes I've made) Around here many think its crap hay because its stemmy but IMO it is the best hay...

    2019-2020 Hay Pricing ?

Don't see it changing here except for the little guy who wants a roll delivered on Sunday.

    Hemp

Grit, have you read how its going to work in Georgia? They are only going to allow three farms and the bidding for the permit for one of these three licenses starts at $100,000 and it is NONREFUNDABLE if you don't get a contract. AND, if you do get a license you have to pay the $100,000 every...

    free hayground is too expensive

I just fertilize per soil test. You may have better litter than I can get because three tons would never provide what I'd need for hay.

    free hayground is too expensive

Are you saying 3 tons of chicken litter will get you through a whole year of hay production?

    fertilizer

Friend of mine did something similar to this for years. It was monitored and tested and he had to keep the pH above a certain level and they would even spread lime for him if it needed it. It was a big savings for the company and was obviously good for him too. He never had any issues.

    Hay shortage

I think you are wise buying it that way. I'm not in the hay business but had a surplus and a guy asked how much I wanted for it. I told him $25/roll if he came on and got it before I had to move it from where it sat. He said he was coming right away but didn't work on Sunday. Never saw him...

    Pasture Planning Help

I agree. Having an excess amount of a high maintenance grass like bermuda leave much profit margin for a cattle operation. Personally, I use bermuda mostly for hay production since it will produce more forage than the cattle can eat when properly cared for. Failure to utilize the bermuda...

    Fire ants in pasture

Its so wet here the ants have to have their mounds high above the ground else they will drown. I've been going out of my way putting the wheel of the tractor on the mounds and it just pushes the whole mound underground/underwater. I know it doesn't kill the whole mound but I'm pretty sure I...

    Horse hay

A guy here does that too. Buys cheap round bales and unrolls them with a modified peanut inverter and feeds the hay into the square baler just before after its sprayed with green dye. You probably not going to believe this but he used to be an attorney till he was disbarred. (Yeah, I find...

    Horse hay

If you didn't have to chase them to get your $7.50 then you should consider yourself lucky. My would-be customers are the reason I'm not in the hay business.

    Rome plow

I didn't know there was any other way to do it. As said, works like a dream.

    Using Plant roots for aeration

Depends a lot on your soil type. A clay soil is going to be a lot different than a sandy soil but generally as a whole you are better off not trying to push your productivity too high. I think this is a common mistake.

    Short window

I got a break in the weather about two weeks ago and was able to get one field up. I was going to cut three fields but I got cold feet and didn't. Glad I didn't because it has rained every day since I got the hay up. One of my friends who won't work on Sunday delayed his cutting till the day...

    Hay

Stick a syrup tank out there and they will eat it just fine. I'm cutting my second cutting which should be my third or fourth cutting at the moment. Mine is past rank and I dread baling it - assuming I can get it to dry since the meteorologist just doubled the chance of rain. I don't even...

    Short window

I can't recall a day when it hasn't rained so I'm not cutting anything till this stops and the ground dries because its saturated and I don't think I could ever get the hay to dry for it steaming from the bottom no matter how many times I fluff it.

    Even a blind squirrel

It has rained every single day since you posted this. Went to see a fortune teller today and she told me she saw cotton seed or syrup in my future.

    Even a blind squirrel

I hope it does dry off some. Its going to take some time to get the soil moisture down to where the hay will dry and not just sit there and steam. IMO, the steaming is worse than rain because there is no way to get it to dry properly. I may have to make baleage but I'd rather not but I'll do...
