    Clover Galore

I have red clover that does well every year in my hayfield. I know people say it needs reseeded but that has not been my experience. I have had this place 7 years and it is still going strong and I would bet just about anything the previous owners haven’t seeded it either.

    Turned out today.

I have about 20 acres give or take stockpiled but I am keeping the cows close to the barn feeding hay while I decide whether or not im just going to sell them.

    Weed Wiper

I have not. Just too many irons in the fire right now and the new hay guy is not letting the JG get very tall before he is cutting it so all is good as of now. Maybe some day though.

    Cost of Hay

My JD dealer sells brand new jd 450e balers (netwrap) for $27,499. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of course and probably not something i would have a hay business with but for a small farm that had to make their own hay? Maybe?

    Cost of Hay

I run a pretty small herd so I can graze as much as possible and get by with only having to have 1/3 of my hayfied. I let the guy that feeds hay all year long make my hay. He does run a lot more cattle so he can say that… When he quits I will have to get in or get out because there is not a...

    The way I unroll hay

I think you will be better off with that one, it’s well built. Just a tip you probably already know but I didn’t is you only need to drive those spikes in basically just far enough to clear any gates you will be going through. 8” or so? Depends on the size of bale. For whatever reason I had a...

    The way I unroll hay

last time I talked to anyone from hay b gone was back in 2019. The owners number that I have is 864-323-3060. His name is Baron. I will tell you how my experience went. As you can see in my post you quoted I had talked to the owner and he was supposed to make a trip up my way and was going to...

    Bush Hogging a Hay Field?

Mowing is not done very easy and I won’t take a tractor on a lot of it. I do think I could use a track loader with brush mower attachment but….$$$

    Bush Hogging a Hay Field?

Cedar is out of control in this area so that was one thing among other ‘junk’ I was thinking about. Likelihood of a burn here is pretty slim. Mainly, I just look at my property that the previous owner let go and wish I could just torch the place. 😆

    Bush Hogging a Hay Field?

Gallia. I think the difficulty with my place would be the terrain at the property boundaries. I can’t imagine it being easy to put in breaks to prevent burning up my neighbors places. I have in-laws on the one side of me as well. Lol.

    Bush Hogging a Hay Field?

I wish burning was more common here. I’d love to light my entire property but nobody does it that I know of and I am not brave enough. Lol.

    Hay unroller

If you have a well built one there is no reason not to carry the bale with the unroller.

    Glyphosate or not?

I don’t use glyphosate unless i am trying to kill everything. I also don’t use it on fence rows because typically you get bare dirt that either erodes (hills here) or weeds just grow up there all the time anyway. On the fence rows i use a broadleaf and just let the grass smother anything out...

    Paddock sizes

If you can, run a single high tensile wire on the inside of your perimeter fence. Charge just that wire and then use polybraid on reels and hook them to the high tensile wire. With the perimeter wire hot you can hook on it anywhere and don’t have to keep moving the charger. Just make sure it is...

    Paddock sizes

Anything stopping you from making 8 paddocks? Here is a website that you can look your land up on and map out acres by using pins. I have compared it with the fertilizer guys gps and it is pretty accurate with that along with some other programs. https://www.mapdevelopers.com/area_finder.php

    This year

My neighbor paid a guy to do his hay before my brother in law bought the place and now I have the field. The neighbor asked me one time if i could grab a bale and feed it to his horses because his tractor broke and was in the shop. I go over and stick one with the front end loader and when I...

    This year

Our first cutting was done in May before Memorial day which is pretty rare here. Thankfully the guy that does the hay now is the type that doesn’t mess around. It has been cooler than usual this summer so the johnsongrass isn’t growing like it should. We will get another cutting but who knows...

    Stock piling grass vs hay

I have played around with feeding hay some in the summer in order to not deplete my grass before winter. Then I am just moving a polybraid when it’s nasty out instead of feeding hay and feeding hay when it’s nice out. But, you better manage you grazing real good or you will feed hay in the dry...

Johnsongrass doesn’t like to be grazed? It does well here.
