    Young heifer bred

Think positive and be prepared for the possibility it won't go well... 🤞🤞🤞🤞

    Young heifer bred

Don't feed her any grain or extra until she calves so the calf doesn't do a late trimester growth spurt/weight gain...... Sounds like a family of cows I have... they all seem to start to come in heat young and calve young if we aren't real careful to get the bull out before they should even...

    Big boy

We have 2 Quaker Hill bulls that we got a year ago. First calves on the ground out of heifers... probably the same 60-75 lb range, they were slightly calving ease which we needed... NICE calves so far... Have 7 on the ground, one more to go... even the one out of the longhorn is a nice calf...

    New bull time

Yeah, you didn't need the red bull with a possible attitude problem. Sure hope you can get back to a few more cows and fooling with some more calves...

    New bull time

I agree, with @gcreekrch ... he is not perfect but I have seen alot worse... Get the cows bred, give him a little time to mature... We just sold that gelbvieh that had the scrotal hernia... weighed 1600 and brought over 2100 after commissions. Let yours grow a little, he might look better...

    Dry cows

Are these some of your one and dones? or will they get brought down and worked and put out to pasture somewhere else? That's pretty remote looking country.

    Last heifer calved today.

Congrats on the "last of the heifers to calve"... The "heifer" is pretty good sized for being 17 months... Did she get caught by the bull without you realizing it? Those Jersey's and jersey crosses are famous for that....

    Calving 2024 Charolais

Congratulations on a successful year... That last one looks like a nice sized heifer. Your birth weights are great, especially if you didn't have to help too many of them. You have some real nice cows, good size, and from last years pictures, they raise some dandy calves... How has your...

    Udders influenced by bulls?

If the calf can suck without much help... and will probably favor the back teats the first few days in my experience... at 12, I would not be so critical... If she was 6 like @pdubdo 's cow, I probably would not keep a bull calf for a possible herd sire. I would however, not , just can her...

    Beef heifer breeding questions

Bleeding off is not a guarantee she didn't settle... hoping she did... One thing, with some of the guernsey nurse cows I had,....seems they released eggs real late... I would breed them 12-24 hours after heat... one would always settle then... might be something to try... Or give gnrh as soon...

    One or Two?

Glad you were close and able to get it pulled. Hope it gets up and going for you... post a pic in a day or 2 when it is up... be interested to see it next to her.

    Beef heifer breeding questions

Not sure why you would be bummed out that she was not showing any major signs.... If she had good discharge when tech bred her, that is as good a sign as any. Many dairies are not seeing the obvious signs in their cows and using the newer detectors which measure the amount of activity of the...

The fun with heifers calving continues.

24 hours is about as old as you can let them go to be able to catch them.... they certainly are too much for me... and much TOO FAST after that!!!! Congrats on the new momma and calf....

    Beef heifer breeding questions

As with any breeding, there is no guarantee... but this gives you a better chance... the only other thing I have done is to breed AI , and if they don't seem to settle, they go with a bull... You could use a bull for 30 days...in by the day they are due to come into the restless/heat time...

    Beef heifer breeding questions

I have always done gnrh with the first breeding at least....especially for some that have been bred once or twice already; and cheap enough, so do the 2nd breeding also. I had alot of trouble with some of my guernsey's settling... found out that a couple would seem to delay releasing eggs...

    Beef heifer breeding questions

If you are trying to do it on natural heats, even if you don't see them standing... when you see them getting restless or a little rowdy... BREED THEM.... if they are still showing signs 12 hrs later breed them again. 2 straws of semen 12 hrs apart is by far better than trying to time it to...

    Wrong but consistant

@clovlanfarms ; The vets here do hundreds of dairy animals on many farms. They can tell the sex on embryos and many of the registered herds of dairy cows I test do sex the calves in utero... they can accurately sex them up through about 90+/- days... then it is harder to tell the sex... most...

    Wrong but consistant

Early in the pregnancy, the vet actually gets a feel for what ours called the "slip"... has to do with how much fluid is in the uterus and the horn.... if real early, like 25 to 35 or 45 days, if the vet isn't very light with the touch, they can often slip the pregnancy... Once it goes over...

older cow with bad bag..but new heifer calf...what are the odds of her passing bad bag to new calf?

15 month old thread... I think the OP probably made some decision a while back....
