    Timed AI most recent trends?

Gnrh basically pops any follicles that have started to develop and creates a corpus luteum. If the time of the cycle is right an egg would be released for timed breeding. PG, lutalyse causes the CL to regress bringing about heat in a few days. A Cidr provides progesterone in place of a cl so...

    Timed AI most recent trends?

On rebreeds, you are stuck breeding off of an observed heat because the that’s to the only way to ensure that the cow is open. There is a protocol to put cidr’s in two weeks after the first service to line things back up for round two.

    Collection costs

What are the costs associated with taking a bull in and getting him collected? How many straws can be expected per collection?

    Stolen semen tank

Actually, the drug mafia like to use cattle to bring drug money back to Colombia and Mexico. A couple times, when I was crossing into Canada, I got the full car colonoscopy. I found this a little odd until a friend of mine told me about the time he was at a show in Colombia and there was a drug...

    Stolen semen tank

The other issue is that the semen and embryos need to be kept in liquid Nitrogen to stay cold. I don’t think there is a non destructive way to tell if the genetics are still good.

    Which protocol to use?

You can do that with by giving a shot of Gnrh on day 0 and then give a shot of PG on day 7 and only need to heat detect from day 6 to 13.

    Which protocol to use?

If what you are doing is working, I wouldn’t change. Are you breeding once or twice per day? And I am not sure why you are giving GnRH when breeding off of heats? What I have been doing is Day 0 CIDR GNRH Multimin Day 6 Lute Day 7 Day 9 Breed Heats Day 10 Breed TAI GnRH Day 17 Put Embryos in...

The cows are on their way again, hopefully

I have had the same experience trying to Hereford semen out of Australia. They want an excessive price for the semen and with most of the cattle in have stuff in the pedigrees that I am trying to get away from. The weird thing to me is that the Herefords in Australia seem to be doing better...

The cows are on their way again, hopefully

Why all the American bulls and no Aussie bulls?

    Red angus

The person behind the bulls is more important than pedigree, performance or phenotype. A few years ago, I bought a truckload of open cows from Beckton. Good little cows. Beckton doesn’t sell semen but Mushrush has several good bulls with Beckton breeding. If you aren’t committed to Red Angus, I...

    TAI taking 2X each time

Quality calves are out there but they take some finding. The simplest way to find them is to by splits from large lots at the sale barn.

    TAI taking 2X each time

Whether of you decide to go with a bull or AI, it is going to be expensive with a few cows. For someone with a few acres, a much better proposition would be to buy singles, finish them and sell beef for cash.

    Proven female makers

Getting back to the original point of the thread, why did the OP decide to build a herd by buying a donor cow and and flushing that donor cow to a single bull? Seems like an expensive way to put all your eggs in one basket.

    Didnt come in??

I would resynch her for a timed breeding. Day 0 Insert Cidr, give multimin, and a shot of gnrh Day 6 Lute Day 7 Pull Cidr and remove calves if practical. Most should come in on days 9-10. Time breed on Day 10 with a shot of gnrh. All injections should be with 18 gauge inch and a half needles.

    Didnt come in??

A bred cow is worth more than an open cow. The second largest cost of a cow calf operation is depreciation. If you can get an extra year out of a cow then your money ahead.

    Didnt come in??

I would recommend arming the cow to see if she is coming into heat. If she is breed her TAI with a shot of gnrh. The tougher question is what to do if there isn’t any uterine tone.

Will a bull be able to change post thaw quality

Limited semen supply is a red flag. A healthy bull should be able to produce far more semen than demand.

Worldwide Herefords for the World Hereford Conference

Here is a New Zealand bull that is about to go to stud.

    IVF vs Conventional Embryo collection

Last year, I bought a cow that aborted with the idea that I would try to breed her for a fall calf and if she didn’t settle I would flush her. Today she has cycled for the third time and it‘s time to start thinking about flushing her. I am leaning towards IVF since I don’t think she is...

Going back to school (AI class)

Make sure you are going into the right holes and don’t strike gold. Before breeding for real, I would practice on little squirming heifers to get a sense of how things really are. Old butcher cows are easy.
