It cost to own a horse!!!!!

I loved horses a few years ago. I got tossed by my favorite mare a couple of years ago, I'm too old to bounce. I agree with your expense figures and is now part of the reason I hate horses. My wife still loves them and has five........ Until they die of old age, I'm done!

    Horse vaccinations?

Great question, we haven't vaccine for west Nile in years, not since we called the state about a crow who we saw fall out of a tree dead, he said west Nile is "controlled". So far so good, but I'm curious about it.

    Horse dropping shoulder

Wow! What a big time question, I know what you are referring to as "dropping the shoulder in the turns", on 2 and 3. If I'm correct, what's your thoughts on working the horse on turns so the shoulder he drops has to be on the outside of the turn and basically forced to be the upper shoulder and...

    Real Ranch Horses

Also not sure what johni is doing, but he simply did a copy and paste of Dave's original post which Dave posted almost 5 years ago.

between a rock and a hard place

It is a rock and a hard place with that horse. Probably best what you did, push it off your place and take a couple of days to forget it. It's one of those things without a win either way.

Seems like there's money to be made, don't know where?

Took 2 more cow calf pairs to the sale today. Two horses went through, not bad looking horses, one went for $10 the other for $25. Just seems like there is money to be made here I don't know where though. :? Any thoughts? Also posted I the coffee shop, any help?

    Got my mare back

As chippie said, you can't put a $ value on thought kind of horse, a keeper. Chippie are all your and my horses related? I also have a half brother and the dam of my stallion.

    Got my mare back

I'm with you, why not just skip some steps and live cover? Plenty of protection for both the mare and stud these days. Good luck on the foal! I too miss foals, but the market is still a mess.

    Got my mare back

Sounds like things went well! Was it AI or live cover?

    Horse slaughter

Bottom line is horse slaughter has to come back, as you said cowgirl, you can't give a horse away these days. Last time I was at the sale saw two go for around $75. each. Not worth the fuel to get there and I would sell one like that...... Well maybe one of my wife's PIA horses.

    Breed or not???

What a shame that in the TWH breed color is a primary reason to buy. I'm a QH, paint, guy and while I haven't had a mare bred in a few years ( because they are money pit Denver  ), I did buy a really nice mare a few years ago in foal by a nice stud (world champion). While the colt was...

    pinto horse

PDF, I couldn't agree with you more! To add to that and some of my hang up, is the cr@p some (most) horse breeders produce. They get a POS stallion who can be traced back 13 generations to Leo and that meets their requirement for stallion quality ....... And they sell it as a Leo bred QH.

    pinto horse

  , the last line of my rant about AQHA, APHA and pintos should have read "Also with breed associations it's NOT as much about quality as it is money". Small detail, I left out the word not when comparing animal quality to $$$ the associations want to make.

    pinto horse

You posted while I was writing my short novel  . I didn't know the pinto association did that! Opening the books to any solid to become "breeding stock" pinto..... So is why I don't have much respect for the pinto association.

    pinto horse

I think the horse associations APHA, AQHA and Pinto horse association (PtHA) all got greedy and hurt their associations creditability. Just to muddy the waters more, chippie is right on target with the type of horses allowed in the pinto association. But, which is probably included in the...

    pinto horse

Is it a pinto or a paint? Pinto is a color, any breed of horse with enough white and color combo can be registered as a Pinto. Paint is a breed, paints can even be solid colors.
