    Rank coat color (sales)

Here in Idaho it goes like this (from what I've seen) Black BWF/RWF Red Hereford Solid Whites Big Drop: Everything else Dairy Rodeo/Longhorn

    Killing the Little Man

I'd argue the only folks who could figure out whether a steak is from a hereford, angus or charlois are the folks that brought the cow in, or those in meat science program at TX A&M. The general consumer knows squat, but boy don't they looooove to squawk about how they had this and that steak...

    Killing the Little Man

All the old money here wants to only play in their own sandbox. They'll be ok for this generation, but their kids or grandkids will pay.

    Killing the Little Man

Exactly, if I want to downsize ever, I have to move away. It's too bad, but that's what this area has become-California North.

    Killing the Little Man

According to Zillow, our place has gone up 4X from what we paid. Who really knows how accurate that is, but it's insane around here.

    Killing the Little Man

I'm not sure you've heard the name Thomas Tull, but you might have heard of Teton Ridge Ranch. He's a literal billionaire that, thanks to Yellowstone, has decided to get in to performance horse stuff. He's causing eastern Idaho to explode in the same way that it is here near Boise b/c he just...

    Killing the Little Man

It's funny, no one mentioned land cost. Here in Idaho it's doubled and tripled. 30 acres behind me is listed at $650K. I have no idea on how you'd make that work. You have to be rich and looking to have fun with about 12 cows on that, or rich and buy that as your hay ground.

    Registered cattle

I get there's folks that love the registries, and they do fit in with the industry. But for the little guy, unless you're selling in a well promoted sale, there's not a real good reason to register your cattle. I just don't think it's beneficial if your end game is sell at the barn, or even...

    Registered cattle

The registries are there to line the pockets of the big boys. It doesn't really do anything for you if you're not running a production sale, or have the ability to be in a production sale (ie bull test, state association sale). Even selling private party, I don't think that it adds enough $...

    BELTIE!

If you get a calf out of her you'll make your money back.

    Different Colours

Where are you at? I'm edge of Caldwell, ID. My plans have changed and I'm done doing cow/calf. I'll be getting a small herd of calves and making a go of it from spring to winter and then selling off most of them. My wife is happy b/c I've promised some color out there. Not the straight...

    To introduce a different breed

I noticed that when I phased out the LH's and bought a couple angus, they would hang out angus & angus, LH & LH. I had one final LH that was kind of a loner and was not really part of the group. Just my personal observation. No one attacked anyone, but they would segregate.

Guess I’m selling the wrong kind /Craigslist

Highlands are the breed of choice for the backyard hobby farmer. The gentlewoman farmer thinks that they are super cute and just wonderful. They don't realize all the downfalls. I had a wife of a friend tell me they are getting them. I replied "No, don't." She got pizzy with me and said...

    My experience with Angus

One thing I really like about the Angus breed is the deep genetic pool. Flip through the AI book and there's a ton of different lines. The thing I dislike the most is that the promotion of certain lines by the AI companies doesn't always yield good results. There's no way to tell how good a...

Electric fence first time. Questions ?

I use a 30 miler on way less than that. Usually it runs in the neighborhood of 12 KV (more than in Jurassic Park, BTW). I've never had a miscarriage from that. It goes up and down with wet weeds on it, or if I attach more fencing to it (I move cows around and disconnect when there's no one in...

    Raising Longhons

This is going to be a negative post, but please understand why. We started with longhorns many years ago b/c they were the cheapest. We thought we could market the hides and the skulls, while selling freezer beef. Boy were we in for a rude awakening. -You can sell registered stock. But who...

    Breeding Mistakes

I used Quaker Hills Rampage when he first hit the scene. I used him on a LH cow, so I was hoping for some wicked growth. What I got was a bull that almost ate my dinner post foot surgery. The mistake was using the new "superstar" bull on the scene. Now I ask for CED, DOC and ACCURACY. I'll...

    Inbred Heifer

My concern is that because she’s full Angus and so closely bred that to Angus it might not go well. Other breeds you like that are common through AI services? Red Angus maybe?

    Inbred Heifer

Got a heifer by a bull AND his dam. Didn’t get her separated in time to AI. Oops. She looks alright. No angus inbreeding issues that are external. She’s on 3 mos, so I have not had her palpated for breeding soundness. Would you keep her and breed to Hereford for a complete outcross or can her?

    Deal or no deal?

We're trying to grow slowly, too, but with no rain (same situation here) it costs as much to feed a pregnant one as an open one. We culled a few this summer, and one more that I'm waiting to drop one. Then she's gone b/c she's batsh!t.
