    Bulls

Somebody is getting shafted... and it ain't the cows. That's crazy high. That's prices I would only expect from a small animal vet.

    Big dream coming true

It says something about your area and concerns over calving ease compared to here in the US. You are calving 100 pound plus calves without assistance... and here many of our cows are incapable of birthing anything over 70 pounds without being pulled it seems. Personally, I believe you have much...

    New generation

I had a calf that went 825 at 7 months back in the mid 1980s and at that time when I told people they looked at me like I was fibbing. Times have changed...

    New generation

1100 pounds at 7 months??? That would be a monster.

Beautiful calf... I'd never heard of the breed so had to look them up. Fine animals...

    The End of EPDs?

You musta had the right cow. That's about as cool as it gets. Congrats.

    The End of EPDs?

I did NOT say I didn't use EPDs... It's not like I go out into a bull selection only using my eye. But I do use my eye first... and weed the bulls out by eye first. The people buying my steers aren't looking at their EPDs. They are using their eyes. If a calf doesn't have eye appeal it gets...

    The End of EPDs?

All the "differences" are what make EPDs difficult to use and they make them look arbitrary and unreliable.

    The End of EPDs?

It would be interesting to compare results after decades of using differing strategies...

    The End of EPDs?

One of the most useful classes I took in my college years,/Animal Science/Beef production education was a conformation class. With no doubt in my mind, I can say it has panned out as the best value for time and dollars spent than any of my other classes. I can look at bulls, first, and then make...

    Hereford markings

Not saying it couldn't happen... but it's more likely that the solid red bull across the fence did a little fence jumping.

    Santa gert x Brahman bull

Gerts are already 3/8 brahman. Why would you add more brahman to a bull if it's a cross breed anyway? And as others have said, unless you have some kind of unicorn market for red calves with a lot of ear you might want to think about what kind will make you the better financial return. Well...

    Beef-master x F1-Brahma cross

Ha! One of my favs was Bramousine. An outstanding cross from my experience. But I've had some Brahman crosses that were nuts, that's for sure.

    Beef-master x F1-Brahma cross

You can breed your f1s to an American bison or a water buffalo if you want to. But it won't guarantee you anything unless you have a market for what you get. And Beefmaster crossed with what you have in the picture will result in a conglomeration of visual delight... but some pretty heavy...

That... is a good looking bull.

So it said (if you recall correctly) that larger testes made more sperm and also increased the ability of the bull to cover more cows? I knew the larger equipment generated larger volumes but was interested in if that volume was really necessary to do the job. So (if you recall correctly) that...

    American Aberdeen Angus

If I had a cow that couldn't deliver a normally presenting calf under a hundred pounds I'd cull her. If I had a cow that had a calf under 70 pounds I'd consider culling. Calves are fragile enough without being tiny.

Suggestions on Angus bull to use ?

Post a pic of your bull

So I'm still asking what we are giving up. Are the big SC bulls throwing less well suspended udders? Perhaps leading to early culling? If a Jersey bull is being selected for a tight equipment package and can still settle cows, what are the things that are being missed? Is there some kind of big...

Post a pic of your bull

I've always wondered about the beef fascination with big nuts. I mean, it only takes one sperm. I suppose someone, somewhere has tested bulls with big balls against bulls with smaller balls to see how many cows they can settle in a single estrus cycle, but I've never read anything about it in...
