    Dehorning questions

I’ve never worried about the bleeding and have never lost one to it.

    Bad luck keeps on coming

Odd. I would bet that airports / hangars etc would require some sort of minimum liability insurance. I would if I owned an airstrip or hangar. Every aircraft owner that is registered in Canada or registered to operate in Canada must hold liability insurance, including both public & passenger...

    Bad luck keeps on coming

I’d be damn*d if I’d be using my insurance for an airplane issue. I would like to think any damage caused by an airplane would be covered by the airplane’s insurance. I can’t imagine they would be flying around uninsured.

    Large Animal Vets are gone

We are fortunate that there are a fair number of vets in our ‘county’, although our ‘county’ (we call them Regional Districts here) is half the size of the state of Oregon. We have a vet out once a year for preg testing and that is it. We used to do our own c-sections but it doesn’t happen often...

    Is this Diphtheria?

Don't necessarily need Sulfa pills for diphtheria. In fact jamming pills past the infection can do more harm than good. A drug like Borgal is good though. Whichever drug is used they need lots of it and they need it for a long time. I would treat for 10 days to 2 weeks after symptoms disappear...

    cow peas

I thought we were talking forage peas. My bad. I would be interested in knowing more about this variety of pea that is drought resistant though.

    cow peas

I’ve done peas with oats here. The problem with peas for me is they aren’t deep rooted compared to oats so if they don’t get moisture they die. Last year my peas started well but then failed completely.

    Protein or Energy

In my opinion 90 days minimum. But that’s just my opinion.

    Protein or Energy

That’s a fact. Especially when one considers that they likely won’t have gained anything by about the 3 week mark.

    Minerals

Is the formulation based on the needs for your area? If so none of us can really make an informed opinion. But if it’s just a general purpose mineral then there have been some valid points made I think.

    Stifled

So we packed feed and water to this bull for 60 days because he could not walk to it himself. He has been walking to feed and water since Dec 23, so I guess about a month. He looks like he!l but he’s slowly putting on some condition. I’m thinking by this summer he should be fattened up and...

    Rio max tubs

Well for me at this point I would rather just provide a mineral with an ionophore as the science is settled there.

    Rio max tubs

Riomax claims its microbes increase rumen efficiency so they more completely digest their feed, causing them to need less. But I don’t think Riomax claims anywhere near a 60 percent reduction. They claim a turd from a cow on Riomax will weigh significantly less by volume than a cow not on it. I...

    A sort and a pour

Well, actually you do see %, ppm and IU’s on the same label. Even the label shown on this thread in the first post

    Small Trough De-icers

A person needs to befriend a chemist that can figure out a recipe for a mixture that provides a slow, safe chemical reaction in those jugs. Just enough to keep the contents a bit on the warm side for several hours. I’d Google it but probably end up with the Mounties at my door.

    Minerals

Well I guess if the oxide form is 20% available and phosphate is 40%+ available you would need to figure out how much you want to get into them to decide if it’s right for you. One thing is that they claim magnesium oxide is more palatable than the phosphate so that’s a consideration as well...

    Minerals

If you’re wanting the mag then I would want to ask an expert if this is what you want. According to the label the mag is in oxide form which is not nearly as bio available as in phosphate form. Like less than half as available.

    Cow tag info

I hate the thought of having to pull the herd book out to get basic info that could so easily incorporated into the tagging system.

    Cow tag info

Heifers are the white tags. Heifer is numbered in order of birth. So 58H was the 58th heifer born in year H. Above that is the dam, 99D. It would be easy to arrange it to add the sire, say vertically down one side. Using the order of birth for the heifers number is kind of like a birthdate...
