Where do you ranch out of?

Keeping a bull all by himself?

I've done that, it worked well. Or you could throw a steer in there with him. I just wouldn't leave him alone. He'll get lonely, and I don't like lonely cows, I'm afraid they'll wander.

calf trying to suckle on young heifer

I'd separate. Are you trying to wean that one that is suckling the other one? If so, you need to find a better pen mate, like a steer.

    Kicking myself…

I'd ship him faster than I can type that out. And cut his nuts off so you get more.

Is it to early to fertilize

Everyone here in Idaho is doing it right now. I don't think it's too early.

    Breeding in a small herd

I always waited until heifers were 15 months to breed. I got that from here, all the old timers. It never set me back waiting, and I felt like it was safer for the heifers. If I was doing calves again, I'd buy me a C-list bull on the cheap unless you're looking for replacements. Then I'd AI.

Is this hay combo Ok for Longhorns?

My longhorns would rather eat the weeds through the fence than the grass/alfalfa pasture in front of them. They'll be fine.

    Graining One

There's only two times it's acceptable to buy beef at the store-if your going to cover it in flavor (sloppy joes, meatballs, etc) or if you're out somehow (it's happened to us b/c we were between slaughter dates). Other than that, I know where these animals came from and what they ate, and most...

    Graining One

Naw that was before I cooked it. Thanks! I feel like there could be some more marbling with a longer graining time. I'm going to go for 90 days with the next one.

    Aggressive Bull

Fighting bulls weight about ~1300#. Before the fights they tell the name of the bull, year born, and weight. They're incredibly strong, but the muscling is up front, they got no but. I've watched videos of the cows, and they're pathetic looking. I think for the amount of infrastructure you'd...

    Aggressive Bull

I pet all of my cows, it's a tradition. BUT I ONLY DO IT WHEN THEY'RE IN THE CHUTE. They are not pets. We are not friends. It's safer for everyone like that.

    Graining One

Finally broke in to the Poopy steaks. Here's the first one. I believe it was a rib steak. Tenderness was pretty good. I think I overcooked it a bit, I'm still working on perfecting that.

    Aggressive Bull

Send him packing. Think about this: A new bull costs you $2500+. He runs you over, you'll be lucky if your hospital bills are $2500. Plus, you sell him and you'll have money to spend on a new one that won't come after you.

    Steak size

Those steaks look like what I get for the tri-tip. Way too small for what they're supposed to be.

Had a round with a bull today.

I had a bull that my wife fed while I was on foot surgery rest. I told her to never pat him on the head. What did she do the whole dang time? Yep, patted him on the head. Fast forward about 6 months, and I'm walking ok, but not running. I bent down to pick something up and he took that as a...

    Getting some snow

I had to feed a bale last Friday to our tiny herd. I've got a bunch of hay out there, but it snowed and I haven't moved them around yet. This week they get moved to pretty tall grass for the fall.

    Graining One

I had totally forgotten to post an update! He was 672# hanging. I was hoping to top 700, but it wasn't meant to be. His sire's side was a bit on the smaller side. Good animals, just not meat wagons. I got some steaks at home, and will take a picture when I can remember. Much better marbling...

    Kicking myself…

Numbers wise he looks really good. I'd keep him, and if you like the cows you have AI some. Keep some bulls out of those crosses for future use, but you've got a clean up bull. At this point he's "free" (since he's paid for), and you can get at least one more season out of him if you're going...

    Got the look

    Those are some expensive steers.

    Tanning for beginners.

I have one hanging in my house from our last LH. I did about 1/2 and it cost me close to $400. It was worth it. Now I just need to figure out what to do with her.
