    Hello from Deep East Texas

I hope you have some hills... and you and the cows are on one.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

Three inches in an hour here would be catastrophic. Best of luck. Crazy times...

    Hello from Deep East Texas

The Unicorn Song by The Irish Rovers A long time ago, when the earth was still green And there were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen They'd run around free while the earth was being born But the loveliest of all was the unicorn There was green alligators and long-necked geese Some...

    New Beefmaster Bull

Looks pretty decent to me. Good feet and some angle in his back legs, heavier in the rear and a nice, low tailhead, not very deep but also not a walking gut. A little extra skin in his neck but a nice, tight sheath. Overall, more positives than negatives and any negatives are minor... except...

Best Cattle Crosses For Unassisted Calving

With grass like that why is your, "my stocking rate is 1000 lbs to 26.6 acres right now,"? With those kind of numbers I figured you were on sagebrush.

Best Cattle Crosses For Unassisted Calving

I'd have to agree that with cows having to cover so much ground to find forage that they are unlikely to acquire a worm load easily... but that assumes they aren't already full of worms. With sparce grass I'd definitely worm anything newly acquired before release.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

I had no idea who Jeanne was talking to. I thought she was saying SHE had missing calves. But thanks, and glad yours are accounted for.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

Hope you find him. I found a calf (alive) in a tree once. Gentlest calf might be loaded with a rope.

    Need working facility

Speaking of working facilities... Have any of you seen any built with vertical uprights instead of the typical horizontals between posts? I've never seen any built that way but I've heard there are advantages. I think it was Temple Grandin that suggested cattle are more likely to be calm because...

    Need working facility

A lot cheaper to hire than buy a new trailer and a shiny truck to pull it.

    Need working facility

LOL... I've hauled a lot of cows in trailers I bought for $100 and had to find wheels and tires, and put a floor in before I could use it.

    Need working facility

The point is... we find a way. Being negative and throwing our hands in the air gets nothing done.

Neighbors? Church? Feed store? Hell, even make a deal with the trailer dealer to rent a used trailer.

    Need working facility

Talk to the local sale barn. They usually know several people that regularly attend sales from every direction, so can put you in touch with someone close to you.

    Need working facility

That's probably more true today than what my folks said, "All hat and no cattle." Not nearly as many people wearing Stetsons and a lot more baseball caps.

    Need working facility

I've found that to be the case too...

    First calves - advice needed

It all starts with choosing the right animals. If you have animals that are bred to be capable, stand back and watch, and don't interfere unless you have a malpresenting calf. Cows have been doing this successfully for a million years, give or take. You can look at what's going on and learn how...
