For many years a yearly visit by the vet with his chute has been part of my routine, well over the last 15 years with the same vet. We worked the calves and wormed and vaccinated the cows, often working the calves a second time in the fall. I might have to wait until late in the day but I could depend on them to come out for difficult calvings. Now I hear he is discontinuing large animal work. My facilities are OK for getting up an occasional sick calf or cow, regular head catcher, but not up for general herd work. With the restrictions on antibiotics taking effect as well, this is going to severely effect my operation. One more thing to make me feel it is time to retire. Is there any move out there to allow vet technicians to do this kind of work? It would seem a possible solution. I can't compete with small animal prices and conditions with my cattle.
