Did I put the calf down too soon?

Tuesday afternoon I get called home from work by the boyfriend- 3 day old calf is down. It was very lethargic, and wouldn't open it's eyes. Rectal temp was 101. Mouth was cold per my finger so I put a clean cover on the thermometer- 97 degrees in the mouth. I warmed the calf in the shop. The skin...

Can a cow recover from white muscle disease

Thanks for all who responded to my question. Here is an update on my calf. She is a bit over 300 lbs, so it has been a challenge getting her up. I bought a block and tackle from Tractor Supply. We fashioned a sling with leg holes from an old canvas cover off something. When we would get her up...

Can a cow recover from white muscle disease

She was given a shot of Mu Se by the vet. She initially had 2 days of banamine and dexamethasone. The banamine and dex was repeated a week later. We are to give her a shot of Bo Se 2 weeks after the shot the vet gave her. We are giving her milk replacer, hay and grass, which she eats. She...

    What name?

I needed a calf to use milk from our only milk cow, so I purchased a 3 day old calf that was sired by a Hereford and momma looked kinda like a holstein, but had speckles on her, and a black nose. She was mainly white. The owner called her a "----line" cow. What breed or type of cow was he...

    Last ditch effort- any suggestions?

Here's my update: Yes the cow will eat from a bucket- just don't touch her. We have a chute we borrowed and will be setting it up tonight in my barn. I have plenty of gates and panels to use to funnel her into it. We will get her milked out if it can be done safely. We will put the baby on...

    Last ditch effort- any suggestions?

Update: I got a rope around the cow's neck tonight and tied her to a post in the barn. She about choked herself out ( I couldn't get it around her nose too) so I had to let off. Then I had the unpleasant task of trying to get the rope off her neck. After that I tried to run a couple strands of...

    Last ditch effort- any suggestions?

What I gave the calf was IgG. I don't think I could get a rope on this cow. Dexamethasone- does that have to come from a vet?

    Last ditch effort- any suggestions?

I had a calf born late Sunday night. By the truck headlights, the baby looked like it was covered in iodine- I figured it had pooped in the sac. Monday afternoon I figured out it hadn't nursed- the whole cow was covered in suck marks about the heighth of the baby's neck. The calf was down and...

    Dun's mineral feeder- question

Okay, I got the mineral and the barrel. But I do not have a tree to hang it from. What do you suggest for alternative mounting that won't get knocked over? Thanks, Amy

    Should cows eat the afterbirth?

I was told a cow needed to eat the afterbirth for the vitamins and minerals. With horses, we always removed the after birth as soon as we found it. They didn't want to eat it anyway. What do you guys say??
