Help with charging steer please quick!!!!

Try buying a clip-in nose ring to put on the steer. If he puts his head down, you can use the ring to control him better and lift his head back up and stop the charge. For the kicking, we always put the calves in a blocking chute, then took a rope and tied it to the top of the chute on one...

    first show advice

Honestly, the beet pulp, barley, and soybean oil is all customized to the animal. When feeding the beet pulp, we use a feed scoop and give them 1 scoop if they are at the right condition, they get 1.5 - 2 scoops if they need to fill out yet, less if they're getting fat. The typically for...

    first show advice

We feed our show breeding animals (bulls, heifers, and cows) lots and lots of beet pulp, and add barley and top dress the feed with soybean oil. This is in addition to the pre-mixed bagged show feed. We've found it gives them the "appearance" of being in the show fat condition without filling...

    Clipping Hereford Heifers

Buy the Kirk Stierwalt clipping videos. They are a great way to learn how to clip.

Purpose off zip tie on rope halter?

Same in Denver at the NWSS, you had to have the tie on halters to show they'd been checked in.

    red angus heifers

It's been a bad winter for growing hair. 50 degree days don't help much, especially on red angus.

    red angus heifers

 The 4th is an open heifer. Now you can see why she needed to be turned out to pasture for a while  . She takes after her mom in that aspect.

    red angus heifers

The show is in 2 weeks. Here are some updated pictures. I wasn't able to get a picture of all of them, they were too busy exploring the new pasture.

    National Livestock Show

We'll be out there right before most of the Angus come in with the Red Angus. You'll want to spend a lot of time in the yards. In my opinion, I think that's the coolest part to see. There's a lot of vendors to go look at in the hall. And the Cowboy Bar is always a fun stop.

    red angus heifers

Well... the manager of a local sale barn stopped over the other day to look at some crossbred open heifers we have, and also looked at these. He told me that we shouldn't let any of them go for under $5000. That first heifer is out of a tremendous cow line, so to us, she's worth quite a bit...

    red angus heifers

We rough clipped our show calves this weekend, so I thought I'd share. All are purebred Red Angus. I didn't get pictures of 2 of the open heifers, they didn't have much of an interest in standing to take pictures. They still have about 2 months to go before the show, so hopefully they'll get a...

TIPS ON HALTER BREAKING A BRAHMAN HEIFER

Do you mean tied up all day/night for a few days? Or just for a few hours? I'd never leave them tied up for several days, there's too many ways for them to get themselves hurt. Whenever I tie them up, they're never out of my line of sight, and they're only tied for a hour or 2 in the early...

How times have changed - an opinion

I'm not a fan either, we always wear a solid colored shirt and nice jeans - no holes. What bothers me the most is all the bling. It's everywhere - show stick, halters, belts, jeans, shirts. It's distracting, especially when a person wears all of it at once. I'm not saying there should be no...

    Show Pics

All are purebred Red Angus. This is the heifer from last year. She won every show she went to. These haven't been to a show yet, but these heifers are part of our show string for this coming year. They have been weaned for about 10 days. They go on show feed next week, hopefully I can get some...

    Just Curious

I've never done it in showmanship - you're supposed to be on your best behavior, as is the calf. I'm glad the judge placed her the way he did. I've been to far too many shows where kids who have calves who act up continuously get Champion, because the judge says 'they tried really hard while...
