    How long to wean calves?

I've never had trouble with 45-50 days. The cow has dried up, if they try to suck a little and don't get anything they forget about it.

Selling or keeping two heifers winter spring

If you have the feed, you will do better in the spring. Somebody would love those to turn out in his fresh grass. With a little feed you can get 2 lbs per day easily.

    Tractor rides so rough!

It's the tire pressure. I run about 12 psi in my ag tires. Liquid ballast smooths the ride also.

Has anyone made their own cattle feed

I use my grinder mixer to grind homegrown Corn, Oats, Barley, and roasted Soybeans. Add a mineral, vitamin mix. Usually 3 ton a week.

    Crazy hiefer calf

Takes a lot of patience at times, but they come around. Spend a little time with them each day.

    Weaning question

The cow will be dried up, but continued sucking will bring her back to milk. After 6 weeks the calves will forget about nursing.

    antibiotic free beef ?

Vacines are OK. It's the Growth Enhancers and antibotics that are not used. I don't use vacines that are not needed for my area

Anyone use a calf blanket before?

I have used them, they work good for the first few days when the calves are not that active. The cows lick them out of place some. I guess I left them on too long. They soon get muddy and manured. I bought 4, loaned them out, and I have 2

Cost of raising a calf to wean

A bag of good milk replacer is $53 here. It is not hard to feed bag before weaning. Then medicine if he needs it. Probably $75 is what it costs me.

Dead cow, 2.5 month old orphan

She will probably try to steal a drink or two of milk from other cows and she will keep up with the other calves.

That heifer either has Pink Eye or something in her eye. Get a rope on her, tie her up short to something solid, and look her eye over, lift the eyelids and find whats in her eye.

Can I keep a bull calf with the girls?

I would think you want to wean him after 6 months or so. Maybe you could wean with one of those nose flaps and keep them together.

    Fence

That fence with the top rail and pipe posts was probably chain link fence, normal farmers can't afford much of that. Woven wire is pretty expensive too. I don't know how big an area you are fencing, but 4 strands of high tensile will hold cows, make 2 strands electric.

    Feed Question

That is cheap feed, and it sounds good to me. I have fed the same mix for 10 years except I use barley instead of cottonseed. My protein is not as high. Feed mills around here get $22 per cwt for steer feed.

Kencove vs Stafix Fence Energizer Quality

I don't know about that Model, but Kencove is near where I live. I have been to the store a few times. They sell quality stuff. Much better fencing material than Tractor Supply or the other farm stores here. They don't manufacture fencers, but buy them from manufacturers. They will repair it...

What would you charged to fix fence?

Put a check in the bank this week for $1226.00 The girl took out 2 posts, 2 small 6" cedar trees, and broke a couple strands of barbed wire. I told the insurance adjuster I don't work cheap, and the fence needed fixed immediately to keep cows in. I took pictures, and fixed fence a week before...

    Black Baldie calves

They want them for pets, to halter train, and take to the county fair, or 4H fairs. They don't want 6 month old calves. They would be worth near $900-$1000 this fall, the only cost to me is extra grass for the mother's milk. Some people don't like to take NO for an answer I guess.

    Black Baldie calves

I have a few Black Baldie calves from a Herford bull I borrowed. People see these along the road, Think they are cute, and insist I sell them one. I don't normally sell 2 month old calves. There is no incentive for me to sell. I guess they want them for club calves. This is a dairy area, and...
